We are hoping to visit Galway in 2024 in search of ancestors, possibly in June, but are flexible.

John Delany was born 1848

He married Catherine Dillon in Moylough, Galway on 27 October, 1867

He was a tailor and is believed to have died in (Currobane) Corrabaun, Ireland, but I have no date nor evidence.

His son, Thomas Delany, later spelt Delaney (my Great Grandfather) was born in Clonbrock, Galway 9 Sep 1870, was also a tailor and moved to Manchester..date left Ireland unknown, but he was married 26 Sep 1895 Mary Ann Nolan in Manchester, UK.

My father has done an Ancestry DNA test and is 52% Irish from two areas Galway (his mothers father) and Wexford (his mothers mother).

Does anyone have any links with these people or any knowledge that we could investigate on our visit?

  • The anglicized forms of townland names often varied over time, and the current spelling for Currabane appears to be Corrabaun (in Irish, An Chora Bán), about which you can see more info at this link, which includes an interactive map to use in looking around the area:

    https://www.townlands.ie/galway/killian/killeroran/castleffrench/corrab…

Towards the bottom of that page, you will see links to pages about the neighboring townlands, and one listed there is Cloonabricka, which is probably the Cloonbrock mentioned above.

At the bottom of that page, there are links to Griffiths Valuation (mid-1800's) and also to the 1901 and 1911 censuses.  John Delany is listed there as a tenant in Corranbaun, and here is a more direct link to the info for him:

    https://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNa…

The 1901 census link does not appear to be working, but the link for 1911 does work.  However, It does not show any Delany's then remaining in the townland.  No remaining Delany's are shown in Cloonabricka in 1911, either.

  • Thank you Kevin.  John has died before the 1901 census and Thomas was in Manchester by then.

I am baffled how John would find enough customers to be a tailor for as it seems so rural.  I can’t find a big house or church that he might have served.  Seems bizarre.
