James Hardiman married Margaret Reilly about 1849 and they emigrated to the US the same year.

We believe both families were from Kiltormer as Margaret Reilly's sister Mary Reilly married Patrick Coghlan about 1840 and we know that the Coghlan family were from Clonlahan, Kiltormer.

Mary and Patrick stayed in Ireland and we know that a son Patrick was born about 1841 and this Patrick had 3 sons Michael, Peter, William and a daughter Julia that emigrated to the US between 1882 (Julia when she was only 10 to her great aunt) and 1924 (When William and his family emigrated). The only sibling that stayed in Ireland was the oldest Patrick and he is shown with his family in Clonahan in the 1911 census.

Any additional details on these 3 families would be appreciated, especially a record of their marriages in the 1840's

Thanks

  • Mary:

I went through the Roots Ireland indexes www.rootsireland.ie and although they have records for Kiltormer RC from 1834 for baptisms and 1809 for marriages, I was unable to locate any likely records for the two marriages. Roots does clarify the entry for Kiltormer by indicating that there are missing records for that parish. I also looked for a baptismal record for Patrick Coghlan son of Patrick and Mary but the best I could find was an 1837 baptism in Bullaun RC records. Bullaun is a few parishes away from Kiltormer.

I looked in the 1856 Griffiths for Kiltormer but there was no Patrick Coghlan entry. There was a Daniel Coghlan in Lisheenaguile townland.

  • Roger,

Thanks for the quick response and  I do have access to Rootsireland.

However in the parish search section it says that only the civil records are available for Kiltormer and not the church records?

    Thanks

  • Another volunteer reminded me to check in on the message board when I mentioned that I'd started a new project to identify family connections between the various Coghlans of Kiltormer, since that's where my Coghlan great-great grandmother married in 1846. I know it's almost eight years since the OP but if Mary O'Meara is still active here, please do get in contact.

Coincidentally, just last night, I started building the family tree of William Coghlan of Clonlahan and later Seattle, Washington, his wife Bridget Agnes Kelly and their children, plus William's sister Julia. Do I know if I'm related to the Coghlans of Clonlahan? No, not yet, but I'm hoping by building out the Coghlan tree that it will help me make sense of DNA results when those come back.
