Hello, I am trying to track down any information about my great great grandfather Thrady Ruane and his wife Bridget. Thrady was murdered in 1882 in Loughrea during the Land Wars - he was the coach driver of Sir John Blake.  He left, I believe 13 children - two of whom emigrated to England and settled in Warrington, Cheshire.

We believe that they lived in Knocknadaula, Kiltullagh.

We would be so grateful for any information about Thrady, Bridget and thier children.

Many thanks,

Nichola Roane (Ruane)

  • Nichola:

I went on Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie and unfortunately they do not have the baptisms for the church in Kiltullagh. They did have marriage records but I was unable to locate a marriage record. Likely, Thady and Bridget were married prior to civil registration starting in 1864.

I then went to www.familysearch.org and searched for Ruane children from 1864-1880 with a father Thady and a mother Bridget. Four records came up:  Michael (1864), Mary Anne(1866), Catherine(1870) and James(1870). I assume the other chidren were older. The mothers name was Bridget Ryan. You should search that site to get the exact dates.

I looked at the 1856 Griffiths valuation head of household listing for Kiltullagh parish and there was a Bridget Ruane in Knocknadaula townland. I'm wondering if she was Thady's mother? I also provide a link to the church if you want to contact them about other baptisms. parishh records go back to 1830.

  • Hi there Nichola,

There were also Ruanes in Ballykeeran who may be connected (Lickerrig civil parish i.e. northern Kilconierin). In any event, I will be in touch off-line with some bits and pieces.

    Steve.

  • Hi Nichola,

The story of Thady Ruane is written about in Kiltullagh Killimordaly: As The Centuries Passed: A History from 1500 - 1900. Ed. by Keiran Jordan.  It was published by the historical society (Kiltullagh Killimordaly).  There's a chapter about the Double Murder Near Loughrea by Catherine Kelly Desmond that describes the incident.  There's not very much info about the family, but if you haven't run into this account yet, it would be worth looking up.

    Best, Ann Marie

  • Hi,

I am involved with a group who are recording the graveyard in Bullaun. In time the graveyard records will be available online. While I realise that time has elapsed, I will send in what information I have.

The gravestone inscription reads as follows:

    ERECTED
    BY BRIDGET RUANE
    IN MEMORY OF HER
    BELOVED HUSBAND
    TIMOTHY RUANE
    DIED JUNE 29th 1882
    AGED 52 YEARS
    R - I - P
    ALSO THEIR SON MICHAEL
    DIED AUG. 20TH 1945
    AGED 81 YEARS

I understand that Timothy is a modernised/anglicised version of Thady.
