My ancestors Timothy Walsh born, abt 1825, and his wife Bridget (maiden name Mullins) immigrated to Australia in1857 from the Townland of Streamsford. His parents were Daniel Walsh and Bridget Mahon whom I assume also lived and probably died in the same area.  Would appreciate any information with regard to the Walsh's of Streamsford and the Mahon family connection.

TIA

  • Hi Shane,

You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38): Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at. The Tithe Applotment List might be of use to you, or at least interesting for you. These lists constitute the only nationwide survey for the period, and are valuable because the heaviest burden of the tithes to the Established Church, the Church of Ireland, fell on the poorest, for whom few other records survive. The information in the Tithes is quite basic, typically consisting of townland name, landholder's name, area of land and tithes payable. Many Books also record the landlord's name and an assessment of the economic productivity of the land. The tax payable was based on the average price of wheat and oats over the seven years up to 1823, and was levied at a different rate depending on the quality of land. For Parishes where the registers do not begin until after 1850, this information can be useful, as they are often the only surviving early records. They can provide valuable circumstantial evidence, especially where a holding passed from father to son in the period between the Tithe survey and Griffith's Valuation.

Valuations office in Dublin (http://www.valoff.ie) will have a record of the land registry from 1855 to modern times. This will assist in seeing what happened to any land the family may have had (as it usually passed on to a relation).  You can browse available records for Galway at http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/ .

I wish you the best of luck with your research.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

The family seem to be still there in 1901

    http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Grange/Streamsford/1386713/

    There are 2 in the Griffith's valuation : http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/galway/grange.htm of 1855

and Daniel seems to be in the Tithe allotment books :

    Daniel WalshKillariue, Kiltullagh, Galway1826

    Hope that helps

I am not from the area and hopefully someone from there can point you in the direction of their modern descendents soon

  • Hi Shane,

There is a Daniel Walsh on the 1821 Census of Kiltullagh as found in the 'Kiltullagh Killimordaly As The Centuries Passed A History from 1500-1900' book edited by Kieran Jordan, but, Daniel is located in Killarriff (today spelt Killarriv(e)) in the Kiltullagh side of the parish, as oppose to Streamsford in the Killimordaly side of the parish.

This Daniel Walsh, also has a wife and family, but, his wifes name is Mary. You noted your Daniel Walsh wife's name was Bridget...However, his eldest daughter is Bridget (may or may not be taken after his wifes name...maybe she is Mary Bridget or vice versa)

There is however another Mahon on the Tithe Apploments Grange Civil Parish (I cannot see a date associated with this Tithe)
William Mahon is located in Corabane still in the Grange Civil Parish but when i view it on google maps its south of the R348 between Ballyfa and New Inn.
