My ancestor Catherine Monaghan left Ireland in 1841, and emigrated to Australia, arriving in 1842.

She married Thomas Cullen in Geelong in 1844, aged 21. (The ceremony was Roman Catholic).

Her death certificate (d 1917, aged 94) records her birthplace as Lackargh, Galway.  Her birth year is estimated as 1923.

Her parents are recorded as James Monaghan and Honorah (Norah?) Connors.

Also on the ship with Catherine were Mary Monaghan aged 13 (b c1829) and James Monaghan aged 28 (b c1813), also from Galway.

I would be grateful to receive any information which might assist in tracing whether any records are available for Catherine or her parents.

  • I wonder if that placename could be Lackagh ?

Lackagh is a civil parish, and also an RC parish in mid Co. Galway.  See : Map of Catholic Parishes East Co. Galway (John Grenham/Irish Times)

  • Hi Marilyn

    There are 2 birth/baptism records for Catherine Monaghan in Galway - 1 is 1823 & 1 1824 on www.rootsireland.ie/

They are both in LOUGHREA which is in the list of Galway East parishes on rootsireland.

It costs to view the full record on the site.

On ancestry.com there are some family trees which have her parents' names as James Monaghan and Honorah Connors.but I couldn't find this record.

    There are 4 baptisms of Mary Monaghan - 3 in 1828 & 1 in 1830.

They are all from West Galway and LACKAGH is in the list of parishes but none of the Mary records is from there.

There are no records of James Monaghan around 1813.

  • My first thought was that the parish was Lackagh, Co. Galway too. RC Parish records there start in 1842 for baptisms and 1841 for marriages.
