Hallo. I'm the new boy - just joined today.
My interest is in my LALLY family. My gr.gr.grandfather, Patrick James Lally, was born in Loughrea on 13th November 1818. His parents were James Lally and Annie Brett, presumably born about 1790. None of these ancestors appear in census, bmd or directory information. If you have LALLY ancestors from Loughrea about this time please get in touch.
Thanks
Stephen Lally

Stephen, there is a John Lally, buried in The Abbey Cemetery, Loughrea in 1832.
There are more Lally's, but their deaths are listed about 1911, 1920, and 1921 and possibly later.
Also check the Clofert Diocese lists. I found a microfilm from the LDS, and rented it for several weeks. It has all the BMD records since about 1810 or so for the Loughrea Catholic church. Film #1279216 and #1279217. The title is "Parochial registers of Loughrea (Galway), 1810-1901".

Many thanks for your useful comment. I'm following this up at my local LDS Family History Centre but they're hardly ever open. I will go and view these films in the hope that they'll give names of witnesses etc other than just the names of brides, grooms and babies.
Best regards

Hello Steven.
Yes, witnesses, as well as, Godparents are listed. It's literally films of the original church record books, so you have to get used to the priests' handwriting also.
Most everything was written in latin, except for the people's last names, which I've always noticed was the actual spelling of the last names. Most first names are the Latin equivalent.
Sometimes I got lucky, and there would be notes in the margins, like for baptisms, a note would be written in many years later stating that person got married to "so and so" on "such and such" date.
I have about 300 copies of the pages of those films, and can email you several samples if you'd like, so you'd know how the books are shown.
You can email me at MNAJPA@aol.com
Thank you,
Mary

Teresa. Many thanks for your interest and this info. I don't know if there's any family connection here. He's not 'my' Patrick who died in London. I'm gathering info on all the Lallys I can find to see if I can spot some family link but no joy so far. One day!
Thanks

Hi Stephen,
To really get you thinking there were and still are Lallys and Bretts in the parish of Kiltullagh/Killimordaly about 10 miles from Loughrea...
On the Kiltullagh Killimordaly 1821 Census for the townland of Lisnaherrick (Knockatogher) there was
Lally
James 48 Farmer/Labourer
Anne Wife 46
James Son 18 Labourer
Wm Son 22 Jusane?
Pat Son 4
Sally Daughter 15 Flax Spinner
Charly Grandson 5
Sally Mother 86
Pat there may be your Patrick??? Just something to think about...
{Sally Lally buried here in 1833. Ann Lally death/burial 24/05/1832 age nor recorded...there is also an old grave of Dines Lally death/buried 00/00/1772 aged 56 in Kiltullagh Graveyard errected by his son Michael and a Thomas Lally Death/Buried 04/12/1861 aged 61 errected by his wife cecilla Lally}
4 generation of Brett family here in Kiltullagh but only seem to have come in mid 1800's ( seem to have come from Cahernalee, Bullaun, Loughrea). there is one Brett on the 1821 Census of Kiltullagh/Killimordaly that was a Mary Brett, 16 a house servant at Carroroe House, Kiltullagh.
All the very best

Hi Stephen,
If you weren't able to get the baptismal films I happen to have them right now. I am going to the FHS on Saturday and would be happy to see if I can find Patrick James Lally. I will say, I had my first look on Tuesday and they are VERY hard to read (light, small handwriting). Because you have a month of birth it shouldn't be too hard. Just let me know!

I'm sure IRO never told me about your post as I'm usually very conscientious about replying. The information you gave me last November could well be an extremely important link in my tree. And I've spent the last year researching, visiting Loughrea, Woodford and Galway archives etc and I'm just finishing my Ireland family history which may now need to be changed.
So be it. Let me first give a likely link to the family you show. Freeman's Journal of 19th July 1821 reported a murderer, William Lally, who hacked his grandmother to pieces. His grandmother and his sister were both Sally. The ages of William and Sally jnr match. It happened in Knockatogher. I think there's a 95% chance that this is the family you found for me in the 1821 census. You can't read the occupation of William and record it as "Jusane?" I think the word is "Insane".
In my searches I've found several individual James, Patrick and Anne Lallys but have never been able to link them to each other and I don't reckon there's more than a 20% chance that they are my family. But this family you've found I would possibly put as high as 75% certainty that they are my family. This is because there is a Patrick Lally (age 2 1/2 but in the census as 4), with parents James and Anne and within my search area round Loughrea and with Bretts in the locality. What is the % chance of there being more than one Lally family within 10 miles of Loughrea of James and Anne with son Patrick born at about the right time?
So this may be the eurika moment but I'm keeping calm. Because I could find no BMD or census info on my family I've gone on to describe the life and times around Loughrea 1800 - 1850. I've included two Lally girls from Loughrea workhouse ("Ripley's" ancestors) and another Lally family that emigrated to US from Loughrea. My work is just about finished at 35,000 words. Is it time for a re-write?
Many thanks for your information.
Sorry about the late reply - and sorry I've not found Count Lally but maybe a murderer !!

I'm sorry I've not replied earlier to your post.
I've spent many a happy hour squinting at the microfilms at the Mormon church near here. They are incredibly difficult to read. My film was copied in the 1980s so probably the technology wasn't as good then. I couldn't find Patrick James Lally or any other related Lallys in births, marriages or deaths. I found the marriage of Patrick Lally and Bridget Farrell on 20th March 1817 and they are the ancestors of a lady I'm in touch with in USA. I reckon that in a small town like Loughrea with only a few Lally families and with people moving about very little, the Lallys of Loughrea area were all probably related in some way. But can't prove it.
See my reply above which may be exciting for me.
Many thanks for your interest and your help.
Best wishes

I am glad that you were able to get a hold of the records. I agree that they were very hard one to read! I can also report that I have the Killimore parish records from the 1830's right now and it seems that some of the Dignan's were sponsors of several nieces and nephews and may have even lived there. I also noted several Lally families are in the various lists as well. I will see if I can find some names and dates and post them in the next week. Congratulations on your great news!

Well, well, well Stephen that truely is some story. Can't imagine how that would have affected the Lally Family at the time, not to mention the other neighbours around. Yes, I think it's a fair assumption to say that William was indeed Insane. It not really suprising then that Patrick would have headed off to London, in search of work and possiblity to excape all this.
Lally's Cannon and Coens are all names I have heard of even today in the Attmyon area of the Parish of Kiltullagh Killimordaly (it would be the Killimordaly side of the parish).
Is this your family on the 1861 census in London? Naming the eldest James William after his brothers and father would be common
