Hello,  I'm posting again to see if I can find anyone who can help me with my ancestors who came from Bullaun, Loughrea. I have traced my great-grandparents back with civil and church records, and am stumped to go beyond. My great-grandfather was Patrick Leonard b,abt  1847 (f. John, farmer)  m. Margaret Raftery Coen, b about 1860, m 1882. They lived in Danesfort on the Annie Dolphin estate.  Children all born there, last one in  1894.  Margarent's parents were Thomas Raftery b abt1816 and Bridget Finn b.  abt 1818. Margaret had a brother Thomas Raftery, b abt1853, who married Maria Burke b.abt 1870, daughter of Michel Burke, b abt 1818.  This is all the information I have. Hoping to find what happened to them. I'm leaving for Ireland on the 30th of September. Love to find gravesites. I already have the information for their homesite. Thanks!  Susan Manning

  • Hello again Susan and I hope you have a great trip.

We do have a couple parish liaisons in the Loughrea area. I will send them an e-mail and hopefully they will respond. Loughrea is a lovely town. Make sure you stop at St. Brendan's Cathedral which is the cathedral for the Diocese of Clonfert.

In case you don't have it, here is a link to the parish register for Loughrea parish. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0336  Records start in 1827.

Forgot to mention that there is a very nice pub in Craughwell called Rafterys. Don't know if there is a connection.

Craughwell is a small village about 14 kilometers west of Loughrea. You can pick up the R446 road in town and follow west to Craughwell. Galway city is about 20 minutes further west from Craughwell.

  • Thank you, Roger!  Hope to have the time to check out that pub, too.  I was excited yesterday to locate the civil death record of my great-great grandmother, Bridget Raftery, who died at the age of 92 on Jul 03, 1902 right there in Bullaun with her daughter, my great-grandmother at her bedside.  What she lived through there, and what a survivor!  Can anyone help me with locating cemeteries in the Bullaun area? I know that she is not buried at Garrybreeda(one of her sons and his wife are), but now that I know her death date and where, I'm hoping to find the cemetery before I get there. Thanks again for all your help!   Susan

Your best bet is to contact the New Inn/Bullaun parish  http://www.clonfertdiocese.ie/new-inn-and-bullaun    I tried to find an e-mail address but did not see one. The Clonfert Diocese office may be able to help.

  • Hello Susan, I'm currently researching families using the Leonard surname in County Galway, specifically I'm interested in Leonard familys from the Loughrea area , as I'm trying to establish if there is a link between them and my own family. I'd be interested in sharing information with you. I have done some research on the Loughrea Leonards that might interest you. My email is xpeterleonard@gmail.com if you want to drop me an email. Thanks Peter
