Your Grandfather is no length away - you will definately be able to find out where he was from - however you should come up with some estimates to help volunteers.  You can probably guess his date of birth - what about date of emigration - and if it is before 1943, then he probably went through Ellis Island.  Check those records to see who he might have travelled with. If you have any other details, write it up here (you are in the right place - the main County Galway website)...

I might be able to help find his ship manifest, which might show: the relatives that he was going to in the US (maybe even a cousin that might have sponsored him will help firm up family ties in Ireland); his relatives he left in Ireland; as well as, if Loughrea was his address in Ireland.

If you don't want to post the information here, please feel free to email me at mnajpa@aol.com.  If you want me to hunt for him, I'd be starting with him in Boston, and going backward in time.  What I mean is, I'd need to find him in census records in the US, try to find his death certificate (which often shows his parents) and/or marriage record (again, often showing the parents).  I would need to know who his wife was and when/where they got married, so I could find the family in the census records.  (This part you might not want to post here, since it may include information on your mom/dad and any of their living siblings.) 

After finding him in the US, I'd hunt for the ship manifest for clues on his Ireland address and nearest relative.  THEN we can come back to IRO and hunt for his family in Ireland.

Mike has a good point, it helps to know when he was born and when he went to the US, so posting all of your grandfather's basic information, will help us all find out more for you.  There are Mahons buried in The Abbey graveyard, several of the family are buried in the old Abbey Ruins, so it's very possible that your grandfather has roots in Loughrea itself, and not a surrounding town.
