I'm looking for information on Thomas McInnes born in Loughrea about 1818.  On 6th August 1833 he was said to be 14 years and 3 months old when he joined the British army regiment 25th Regiment of Foot, the King's Own Borderers as a drummer boy, although his discharge papers show that he was a shoemaker by trade.   I note from their history that they were in Loughrea from around 1819.  I'm hoping there may be some record of his birth locally in Loughrea although I believe McInnes is a Scottish surname.   Would appreciate any help in progressing further.

Did find his second marriage from Manchester from 9 February 1857 , private 25th regiment, he married Ellen Crossley and he was a widower by then.

Thomas his fathers name was William McInnes a shoemaker. Ellens father was Bernard Crossley a weaver by trade.

    Hope this helps,

  • Hello Annemarie,

This is my wife's great great grandfather.  After Ireland the regiment went to the West Indies, South Africa and India.  Thomas married Bridget Lisle nee Gorman in  India in 1845.  They had a child, Christina, in 1847.  The regiment returned to England in 1855 but sadly Bridget died in India and is buried in Calcutta.  I know he was with the regiment in Stockport in 1856 and then went to Scotland for a while.   Didn't know he married again.  Well done to you to find that second marriage when I couldn't and have been looking for 6 years to find out what happened to him!

To be honest I thought I had posted this on the Loughrea Parish page.  Will try again.

Many many thanks for your help.

    Regards
