From census records I have traced back to my Great great great paternal Grandparents, William & Mary Kelly (both born c1811). As far as I am aware they had six children, Owen (my great great grandfather) born c1833, Bridget - born c1835, Patrick - born c1839, William - born c1841, Catherine - born c1844 and Hugh - born c1847. They emigrated to Stoke on Trent in England at the time of the famine as they first appear in England the 1851 cencus . I don't know Mary's maiden name but I do know that Owen married Catherine (Kate) Noon in England in 1858, census records show Catherine was from Galway and her father was Patrick Noon.
The 1861 census shows Owen as being from Balinasloe but the 1881 census shows him as being from Athlone? I have tried tracing the sibling group on the Westmeath and Galway Family History websites but to no avail. I don't seem to be able to find any records of the family in Ireland. Can anybody help please?
Many thanks
Matthew Kelly

Do you know much about their emigration? The dates, the reason why they left, who they mighthave travelled with..etc.? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than theport of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, Ellis Island), this could be agood place to find more information, and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin. Shippingmanifests can be checked ?which may lead to more clues. The next thing you could do is find the counties and places in Ireland your family names are mostprevalent. Look at the website http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ and perhapssomething will match some other clue you may have found elsewhere? If nothing turnsup ? it is advisable to try different variations of the spellings of the names. If you have a possiblefirst name you could try the Irish Census 1901, 1911 at www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ or the landvaluation record called Griffiths Valuationhttp://askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml SURNAME SEARCH You can check for information about the frequency of the name in the mid-19thcentury and any other variant spellings of the name here: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/The National Archives of Irelandhttp://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/ The National Library of Irelandhttp://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx The National Archives UK ? genealogy search:http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/ The Public Records Office of Northern Irelandhttp://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm
