  • The family story that I have of  John Henry Miskell, DOB 16 Sept 1871, is that he was born in County Galway, and stowed away on a ship at age 14, coming to the US.  Reportedly taken in by a Catholic priest.  I have found a naturalization record for a John Mescall, Nov 13, 1885 for application, with arrival reported Nov 2, 1883.  I am not sure if this is him; however, the age would fit.

At some point, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio.  I have the 1900 and 1910 Census records : 1900 Cleveland Ward 8, Cuyahoga, Ohio; Roll T623_1252 Page 26A; Enumeration District - this lists his first wife, Mariet -also has been listed as Mary or Marion T-  and two daughters from his first marriage, Gertrude and Florence.  1910- Cleveland Ward 12, Cuyahoga, OH; Roll T624_1170; Page: 2B; Enumeration District: 0192

The next records I have are the 1920 and 1940 Census from Carbondale, IL , which list his second wife, Birdie, and children from this marriage- John Henry, Clarence, and Margaret.  Carbondale, Jackson, Illinois; Roll: T625_375; Page: 2A; Enumeration District: 51; image 747 and Roll T627_814; Page: 1A; Enumeration District: 39-11.

His death certificate from Jackson County, Illinois- Carbondale. Dist#1075, lists deat of death Jan 2, 1941.  Death Certificate lists County Galway, Ireland as birthplace.  Occupation: Special agent for the Illinois Central Rail Road.  HIs father is listed as John Henry Miskell.  Mother is listed as unknown.  Place of burial is Carbondale, Illinois.

A question has been raised as to whether he could have been born in County Clare, as there is a John Mescall birthdate 16 Sep 1871 in Kilmihil, Clare, Ireland? I suppose it is possible.  The above is all of the information that I have so far.

    Thank you so much.

  • Hi Michelle

Just looking at the 1900 census with Ireland and 1885 emigration which fits in with the family story 1910 Census is odd as he has listed NY as his place of birth with Irish born parents -must be a story there

As he was born after the 1863 act requiring registerations I suggest that you contact the Galway records office:

Civil Registration Service, Community Services, 25 Newcastle Road, Galway,
    Opening Hours: 10:00 to 4.30 Mon-Fri
    Contact: 091 546277 Fax: 091 582028

Best to ring them (suggest buying an international calling card so will cost close to 1c a minute)

With that info you should get a place of birth Also see if there is a birth or marriage record for his father and that will give his wife's name They should then be able to get certs for any more children

Speaking of records the marriage records for his first and second marriages should provide a clue as to his mother's name - are they obtainable from the record offices in Cleveland or Carbondale ?

The Griffith's valuation (askaboutireland.ie) has only 7 entries for Miskell in Galway - there is only 1 John However there are a few variations of spelling so that shouldbe used with caution

At this stage the best option is to get a record of John's birth looking at all the spelling options Miskell, Mescall, Meskell, Miskill etc

Let me know what you find
