I am interested in this project. I have potentially my gt grandfather Stephan J. Leonard.  He is listed in Griffith' s and Tithe Applotment. The townlands are Queensfort and Kilannin. I am not sure if they are located in East Galway or not. This sounds like a great project and I hope other counties will follow suit.

The lists of those entitled to the awards, covering almost 60,000individuals, were published in 1796, and record only the names of the individuals and the civil parishin which they lived. The majority, were in Ulster, but some names appear from every county exceptDublin and Wicklow. A microfiche index to the lists is available in the National Archives, and inPRONI. CIVIL REGISTRATION RECORDS Civil registration records are available from the General RegisterOffice (GRO). These listsconstitute the only nationwide survey for the period, and are valuable because the heaviest burdenof the tithes to the Established Church, the Church of Ireland, fell on the poorest, for whom fewother records survive. The information in the Tithes is quite basic, typically consisting of townlandname, landholder's name, area of land and tithes payable. Many Books also record the landlord'sname and an assessment of the economic productivity of the land. The tax payable was based on

  • Paula,    My name is Richard Leonard and I can confirm that Stephen Leonard and I share a common ancestor.  Before I continue I am assuming that the Stephen Leonard you refer to is: Stephen John Leonard born 1788, married Barbara Blake 1818 and died Feb 1879.  They had 12 children.  Stephen's Great grandfather Alexander Leonard (died before 1773) is our common ancestor.  I have traced the family  tree back to the early 1500's.  As I still have to verify some of the data I have collected I do not wish, at this time, to place it in the public arena.  However, if you wish I can forward copies to you of the information I possess.  My email address is leonard.rhl@gmail.com. To giver you some assurance of whom I am you will find that I contribute to the Irish Genealogical Project at http://www.igp-web.com/ by transcribing RIC records.  I also manages Meath & Louth Counties but I note that theyn have not updated their records.
