Hi am following a long 'ant trail' from Killian in east Galway, which has taken me to Cliften and, more specifically, Faul.

I wonder if anyone has any knowledge or information that relates to a Bidelia Rubie (ne Duane) born 1800. She married George Rubie an excise officer, based in Cliften who died between 1841-47 and left Bidelia to raise three children. George pops up in the 'Mayo Constitution' newspaper in 1832 in an article about a cholera outbreak in Cliften - he is one of a group of townsfolk pettioning Lord Anglesey for relief. Other signatories include John D'Arcy, a Bryan Duane (solicitor) and a Pat Duane. Pat lived as a neighbour of Rubie's on Faul and I think that Bryan had some land back in Killian near the D'Arcy's ancestral home of Newforest.

In 1852, Bidelia became the main petitioner against landowner, Geoffrey Davis of Cloonkeen, Killian forcing him to sell lands at the Court of Encumbered Estates in Dublin. I am intrigued to know how she became the main debtee to the Davis family, the resulting sale of Kilcoosh to the notorious 'exterminator', John Gerrard led to the eviction of 165 tenants, including my ancestors.

Thanks John O'Connor

  • Dear John O:

Many thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.

Your query is very interesting and has some very interesting historical content to it!

I have copied it to one of our East Galway volunteers who may be able to assist.

In the meantime, you might consider creating an Ancestor Profile for one of the ancestors or even a Timeline Event about the sale on the XO Chronicles under the parish of Killian.
