FAHY/FAHY: I’m from Queensland, Australia. My birth/maiden surname is Fahey and both my paternal grandmother and grandfather were Galway Fahys - paternal grandmother ‘Ballinderreen’ Fahy - paternal grandfather Ballindooley Fahy. Winnifred Fahy b 1866 (some records have 1869) d 1956, North Queensland, Australia. Various family certificates have Ballinderreen, Cartron and Oranmore as Winnifred’s birthplace. Winnifred immigrated to North Queensland, Australia in 1889 and met and married in Townsville 1895 Stephen Fahy (not related) b 1864 d 1927 Australia - from Ballindooley, Galway. Winnifred and Stephen spelt the surname ‘Fahey’ in Australia. I have information on, and am in contact with, Ballindooley Fahys from my grandfather’s family.
Hoping to link up with descendants of ‘Ballinderreen’ Fahys/Oranmore? Hanleys. Have quite a bit of information but puzzles to solve too!
FAHY/HANLEY: Winnifred’s parents were Patrick Fahy b abt 1829 & Mary Hanley/Hanly. I know very little about Mary Hanley. They had 14 children:
Winnifred, Bridget, Ellen, Mary, Norah, Ann, Maggie,Thomas, James, Patrick, John, John, Michael, Joseph.
I met a lovely older couple, John Fahy & wife Kathleen, in/from Ballinderreen when in Galway in 1982. John was descended from one of Winnifred’s (younger?) brothers and took me to see the farm and, by then, ruined cottage where Winnifred was raised. My uncle, Joseph Fahey, visited Galway in 1950s & 60s and took photos of John & Kathleen and other family members. Would love to link up with any descendants of John & Kathleen Fahy and other descendants of Patrick Fahy & Mary Hanley/Hanly. John confirmed names of 14 offspring above and mentioned my great, great grandmother, Patrick’s mother?, was Alice BURKE but I have been unable to find any information on her.
I’ve found birth records - Ireland, Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911 (Ancestry.com) - for most of 14 Fahy/Hanley offspring.
Some immigrated, at least 4 to Australia: Winnifred, Bridget b abt 1854 Galway d 1926 Qld, Aust, m. McQuillan; Ellen b1858 Ballinderreen-d1926 Qld Aust) m. Jones; and Mary/Maria b ? Galway d1896 Qld Aust m. Murphy. (I have information on these Australian families).
Patrick b. 1864 Ballinderreen; Joseph b. 1868 Ballinderreen; Margret/Maggie b1870 Ballinderreen; Ann/Anna 1872; John b1874 Kinvarra, d1876; Norah/Honor b1875 Kinvara; John b1878 Cartron.
Unable to find birth records for James, Michael or Thomas. Found Australian death record 1881 for a Thomas Fahy – parents Patrick Fahy/Mary Hanly. Unsure if this Thomas is Winnifred’s brother. Unable to confirm this.
Searching Griffith Valuation 1857 using clues from birthplaces, I found what I think may be my grandmother’s family – Patrick Fahy, Michael Fahy - using Ballinderreen, Parish of Drumacoo, Townland of Cartron.
Census of Ireland 1901 & 1911 records - used Townland Cartron, DED Drumacoo, County Galway.

Allowing for some variations in ages, information in this record fits with what could be Winnifred's family - Patrick (shortening PatK), according to census b1829 and living with single sons, Michael b1869 & John b1880 & single daughter, Maggie b1876. Family correspondence mentions my grandmother, Winnifred, writing to her sister Maggie in Ireland around 1906/7. This House 3 in Townland Cartron, DED Drumacoo, County Galway.
1911 Census lists what appears to be the same home at House 4 but the Michael in this record is b1848 and appears to be married to Bridget b1875. Unsure if this is the same Michael from 1901 census. Could be mistake in his recorded age. Unsure if family in this 1911 census record is part of my grandmother’s family. There is a John J Fahy b1907 at this census record. Could this be the John Fahy I met in 1982 from my grandmother’s family?

Unable to find much information on my great grandmother, Mary HANLEY. Ellen Hawkins, (I think) a cousin of Winnifred, is listed as witness/bridesmaid on marriage certificate of my grandparents, Stephen & Winnifred, in Townsville, Nth Qld, in 1895. Ellen Hawkins (b. 1866) was daughter of Winefred Hanley (younger sister? of Mary Hanley) & Patrick Hawkins (m. 1864 Galway). Ellen Hawkins immigrated to Nth. Qld, Australia and married Phillip Gaffney in 1896. Hanley/Hawkins/Gaffney descendents in Australia are the Russells, Sloans and Caldwells. I have quite a lot of information on these Australian families.
Ireland, Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911 (Ancestry.com), led me to birth records of other children of Winefred Hanley & Patrick Hawkins - John b1865, Patrick b1870, Joseph b1872, Thomas b1874, Michael b1876 & Winefred b1877 – most have birthplace as Oranmore and Monemore, Galway. I found on 1857 Griffith Valuation & 1901 Census Townland Rinville East Hanleys and Townland Moneymore East Hawkins who might be Mary Hanley’s family but am unable to take search further.

Thank you so much for this help. Sorry not to see it for a while. Was away from home for a bit, then I had work deadlines etc. and wanted to be able to thank you properly. I was so excited when I saw your post. Good surname you have there - we may be related somewhere! I know Fahy is a common surname in Galway.
I had a few tears for John and Kathleen (Kate). They died only a few years after I was in Galway and so close in time to each other. Thank you for making enquiries for me with Paddy O'Grady and for the postal address of his sister and Kate's niece, Mary Lynch at the Cartron farm. I actually have photos of the grave of John & Kate Fahy from Dromacoo cemetery. My daughter, Bryony, travelled through Galway last year and photographed Fahy graves in Dromacoo and Oranmore cemeteries. When I saw the photos of the grave for John & Kate Fahy, Cartron, in Dromacoo cemetery I thought it was probably my John (cousin) & Kathleen (Kate).
Thank you for confirmation of so much of my information. I'm really pleased because a lot of it was following clues and leads and vague memories from my childhood and teens. I'm 64 y.o. and unfortunately all the people that I could ask here have passed on, including one of my older sisters. A lot of what you sent has helped me make some much needed links.
I've done some quick searching - can't wait to get on to more - and found the 1901 & 1911 census data for the Hanley family in Mulroog West. I have not found much from the other Hanley graves. From the information you mention on Joseph Hanley d. 1880 and Winifred Hanley alias Burke (I guess her maiden name) d. 1881, it looks like the name Burke given to me by John Fahy in 1982 as my great, great grandmother's name was possibly my Hanley great great grandmother rather than my Fahy great, great grandmother. Will keep searching.

Dear Sister de Lourdes, I have only just read your reply to Wins' posting and was hoping you may be able to assist me in my Fahy family research.
My great-great-grandmother was Mary Fahy (1855 - 1936) of Tonroe, co. Galway, the daughter of John Fahy and Bridget Walsh, of Tonroe and Tawin Island. Mary was baptised, married and buried in Oranmore. She married Peter Whelan of Tawin Island & they had my great-grandmother Honora Whelan.
I'm going to list another Fahy and Whelan marriage from that area, whom I'm presuming, because of the naming tradition for their children was a sister of Peter Whelan :
Bridget Whelan married James Fahy 3 June 1836 Oranmore parish church. Witnesses were Thomas Shaughnessy and Mary Nolan. Bridget and James appear to have had 8 children between 1837 and 1847 - John, Honor, Mary, Patrick, John, Michael and Eugene.
Griffiths Valuation lists John, James and Martin Fahy, both of Tonroe and Tawin Island.

Hi Winifred. My names is Esther Murray née Cribbin. My grandmother was Mary Hanley from Galway she was born on May 3 1980. Her parents were Patrick Hanley and Mary Linane. Her siblings were Thomas b 1881 Bridget b1883 honora b1884 James 1886 John 1886 Margaret 1888 Patrick b1889 William b 1892 Margaret b 1894 I presume the first Margrate died and Catherine b 1896 . I wonder if apthese names match up.

Morning all,
I am descended from James Hanley born 1798 in Meath, ireland. Died 1866 in Tuam, Ireland. He married Mary Ryan born 1811-1857.
They had a son Cornelius Hanley born 1847 (my 2nd Great grandfather) in Nenagh, Ireland. He passed 27 September 1911 in Richmond Melbourne. Australia.
His son Cornelius John Hanley born 3rd feb 1872 in Euroa, Victoria. Australia. He married Sarah Morgan.
If any of these mentioned Hanleys are and in your family tree I would be grateful to hear from you.

Hi I am related to the Hanleys Residents of a house 29 in Carnmore, West (Carnmore, Galway) i am NOT blood hanley my grandmother margaret kyne /coyne married Thomas Hanley 1915 so i am related to them via her i have a dna sample please contact me for further clarifications.
Word to the wise to find out who you reaily are base your resaerch on you DNA not certs, court doc ect they are all as crourpoted today as there were 300 years ago sad but true.
