I have traced my family to Boula and was in hopes of connecting to one of the cousins. My 3rd great grandfather was Patrick Horan who married Bridget (Delia) Madden. Patrick can be found in the 1841 Tithe Applotment Books in Boula. They had a son Patrick b 1841 who married Mary Donohoe. The widow Mary can be found in the 1901 and 1911 census with the townname listed as Boley. My research shows me they had the following children: John b. 1864, Edward b. 1866, Patrick b. 1868, Thomas b. 1870, Bridget b. 1872, Mary Anne b. 1874 and Jane b. 1880. I have not been able to find the death registration for Patrick but he must have passed somewhere between 1880 and the 1901 census. We visited the area in 2011 and met the groundskeeper at the church in Boula. He pointed out a house that he said used to belong to Patrick Horan but that they had sold it. We plan on visiting again this coming May. I’m descendent from Timothy Horan b. about 1846 who was a brother to Patrick. He worked at the Ironworks in Eseclar, Yorkshire, England and immigrated to New York in 1894 with his family following in 1895. His wife was Ann Callagy b. 1843 of Lissaniska just north of Killimor. We have met the Callagy’s who are wonderful folks and visited the farm there. I would appreciate any help in locating the Horan’s or learning more about their ancestry.

  • Hello,

I live in Portumna and will ask the parish secretary to check the records for a death of a Patrick Horan of Boula between 1880 and 1901.

  • Hello Dolores,

Thank you for replying. I do appreciate your looking into the records. When we visited 2 years ago I saw a grave up at the old Kilmalinocue Church Yard that had a Patrick Horan (Boula) died 13 Dec 1918 and his wife Mary nee Treacy died 30 Jan 1978. I wondered if that might be my great uncle Patrick’s son. I also saw on the Portumna home page that there was a volunteer Philip Treacy and wondered if that was just a coincidence or if he might be related to Mary. I’ve seen stranger coincidences. Do you know Philip?

Anyway, thank you again for your time and effort. I would be very grateful for any information you would provide me with.

    With best regards,

    Bob Horan

  • Hello Bob,

I do indeed know Philip very well and I'll ask him -- you probably know Treacy is a fairly common name in these parts although many of them are inter-related anyway.

  • Hello Dolores,

Yes I see that Treacy is a common name in the area. But you never know. It looks like the Horan’s are fairly well gone though. The only residential listings I could find were for John & Cormic of the T&M Horan pub. I have spent a little bit of time at their establishment visiting several times over the years and discovered their line was from across the river up in Offaly. Good folks though and John can sure play that old guitar. He has a great voice too. We have a short packed trip coming up in a week and plan on spending the day in the area on Sun 12 May. I’m bringing my brother & his 2 sons.

    Regards

    Bob

  • Hello Dolores,

I haven’t heard back from you since your post on 2 May and was just wondering if they have had any luck in the parish office with the look up of the death of Patrick Horan or if you have been able to speak to Philip Treacy. I realize you are doing this voluntarily and I do appreciate your efforts.  Thanks again and I’m looking forward to your reply.

    Regards,

  • Hello Bob,

no, have not heard from the parish office so will have to make a visit -- there is just one lady part-time there and it's very busy as a lot of requests come in for records.

Philip did get back to me with the following: "Will check on Treacy but do not think , will check with my dad."

    regards

  • Hi Robert.

My name is Pat Madden. I am the parish adm for the next door parish of Tiernascragh and also Fahy & Quansboro. I have no doubt you have cousins in Boula. I have spoken to Francis Hardiman who is the son of Mai Horan. Her father was Patrick Horan who died in 1918. His wife was Mary Treacy and this the Widow Mary named in the census of 1901 & 1911 at Boley. He is most likely the son of Patrick Horan and Mary Donohue and you have his date of birth listed as 1868. Francis lives in Boula and will be able to show you what is left of the old homestead. Another cousin Kitty Lawless also live in Boula. Her father was Jim Horan and her family can be found the the census for the Townland of Gortawullaun. Both sets of Horans come from the same family. Both families are looking forward to meeting you and are doing some research at the moment. You can email me direct at tiernascraghhp@gmail.com and call me at 353-87-6505561.
Im looking forward to meeting you as well and you will be most welcome. Please forward your email2Y details to me.

    Pat.

  • Pat & Dolores,

My brother Phil and his 2 sons came up with me and we meet Francis Hardiman, John & Kitty nee Horan Lawless, Ann Horan and John's son & his family. We had a wonderful reception, went up to the cemetery, saw the remains of the original homestead and had a good chat at John & Kitty's. It was grand making the family connection. Thank you for putting us together. We were in town for just the one night and I wish we could have met you and Dolores. I know I will be back in the future and perhaps we could meet then. Just to walk on the same sod as our ancestors did was quite the thrill. We did tour the workhouse in the morning on our way south and had a very knowledgeable guide who gave us a great tour of the place. Something we should never forget. There is still more family research to be done. Hopefully the records I was seeking will turn up. Take care for now and thanks for all the effort.

    Best Regards
