My Grandfather John Frank Corr of Legaginney, Ballinagh, Co. Cavan was interned at Portumna Jail during 1922/1923. He was arrested on the 30th November 1922, was orignally sent to Athlone then to Kilmainham before arriving in Portumna where he was internned until the 21st December 1923. Are there any records available or could anyone help me with any information. I live in the UK but am frequently in Ireland and would appreciate any help if any is available.

Hi there,
Thank you very much for your query to Ireland Reaching Out. Could you please post your message on the Ballintemple (Co. Cavan) parish profile page here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/ballintemple-cavan
You could try checking for records in the Garda Museum and Archive http://www.garda.ie/Controller.aspx?Page=72&Lang=1
You could also check the military archives here: http://www.militaryarchives.ie/
I hope this is of some help.
Kind regards,

Hi Sinead,
Many thanks for your prompt reply. My grandfather was arrested by British Army Forces, I had originally written to Cathal Brugal Barracks and they sent me onto the Ministry of Defence where I got his IRA Medal/Pension records. I tried years ago at Dublin Castle but I will try again as I didn't obviously ask the right questions!! I left the message on the Portumna Board as I hoped someone locally might know the history of the internees during the war of independence at Portumna Jail. Many thanks however for all your help Lorna Dolinska
