Looking for Maria Meara on the 1901 census.

I assume this is Maria?s family in 1901, in Derryhiveney South:

I can see a birth registered for Mary Anne Meara in Portumna (which would include Derryhiveney) in 1875, volume 14, page 417.

Could this be Mary in 1901, aged 25:

The Meara family lived in Derryhiveny South townland in Kilmalinoge civil parish in southeast Co. Galway. Maria or Mary was not in the household in 1901. I did find a Mary Meara living in Portumna by herself. She was a 23 year old dressmaker. Since she was married in Portumna, I'm wondering if this is your Maria (Mary). Thank you for your help in finding,Mary Ann Meara and her family on the census.

Doe's,15 New street,still survive in Portumna! I have had a look on GOOGLE but can not find it!

New St. existed in 1911 but like you I could not locate a New St. currently. I assume it was renamed after 1911.

No I can?t see New St either. It?s obviously one of the commercial streets (and there?s really only 1 main st). I suspect it?s the main road through the town. As far as the numbers are concerned, there were no house numbers in rural Ireland in 1901. The numbers you see on the census are the enumerator?s private numbering system and bear no relation to any house number that the property may have today. You would need to do a bit of detective work to find out exactly which house it was. I suspect she was living above Bridget Coen's Delph (China) shop.

Hi, a Portumna native here!

New Street is the main street in Portumna and is now called St. Brendan's Street.
