Hi,

I'm trying to locate a grave and am having no luck.  I've tried the National Archives and had no luck, they sent me to the Galway Archives who also had no luck but suggested I try the library.  The only problem is I left Galway as a child and am now living in Ohio!  I'm hoping maybe someone here can give me some advice.

My Great Grandparents Steven and Honor Joyce (nee Flannery) owned a small farm in Killen, Queensfort Dunmore in the Tuam Parish.  I believe they were married in June 1874.  Steve passed away 3 February 1910 and Honor 13 January 1929.  I have a copy of the administration papers (http://nai.adlibhosting.com/Details/archive/110813361) wich say Brownsgrove, County Galway.

If anyone has any leads as to how I might locate their grave I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Seamus Joyce

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I will forward your message to someone who lives close to Tuam. She will not be available until at least Monday.

  • Hello Seamus,

Given the location you have given I am inclined to believe the burial location may be one of two graveyards close to Quenstown,Bromsgove. The attached map have Cortoon which is 2.5km from the location and Kilclooney-Tuam which is 5.5km from the location.

    Map - https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=14klydG9y0qN3_0PufVok0Bx2zkk

Kilclooney-Tuam has been surveyed at http://gccapps.galwaycoco.ie/Graveyards/Search/results.aspx?cid=14&s=joyce&p=Plot+No.&y=0  but unfortunately no Joyce headstone appears to be recorded. A local volunteer may be able to check the Cortoon location, but beyond these two you may be looking at an examination of burial grounds in Tuam town itself.

  • Hello Seamus,

As a side note I added from my Find a Grave profile a Joyce also from Queenstown to Cortoon Graveyard back in 2015

    https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=JOYCE&GSiman=1&G…;

Not suggesting a relationship it does however confirm this graveyard was most likely the place of choice for others from the Queenstown area.

  • I think this might be the place!  I clicked on the Cortoon link on that page and found another Joyce (Dermot). He was from Salthill which is where I was born.  I've been working on a family tree, I'm the oldest of my generation, and there are not many around here from the generation above me. Who knows maybe Joe and Dermot are somehow related. I know where most of Steven and Honor's children ended up. There were three that remained in Galway, two gilrs whom I believe never married and a son Denis that I know nothing about. Perhaps Joe and Dermot are in his line.

Anyway, thanks for helping, I truly apreciate it,

  • Hello Seamus,

Below are the two obituaries from which I drew details from for the memorials on Find a Grave. The second for Joe indicates a son Denis, a name you have mentioned which appears to have been passed down the line, is surviving.

Hopefully you can take this to the next level and make contact.

  • Hello Seamus,

If it's the same one I got sight of y'day there are a lot of Christmas cards to add to your list this year. Still a personal call may be the easiest and surest way to break the news that you are out there thinking of them all.

    Good luck for the future.
