I am looking for any info of my grandfather Michael Shaughnessy born 1878 approx. Galway. Also a his sister Mary Shaughnessy and a half sister Annie Mullins.

  • Thank you for your help, Unfortunately i can only do free searches and so it does not really confirm what i find but i did find somebody elses tree and its possible his parents where Bridget Mcloughlin and Patrick Shaughnessy ? We know Michael ran away from home to join the army and as he was under age he changed his name to Sharkey and served in South Africa in the Boer war. He settled in Derbyshire in England where i found him on a 1911 census but i didnt get any info of his parents but he did state he was from Tuam. I cannot find any info on Annie Mullins it was Michael who referred to her as his half sister she and his sister Mary also asettled in England.

  • Hi Allyson did Michael continue to use surname Sharkey?  Suggest you get a copy of his marriage record which would have his fathers name and as he was born after Civil registration came in Ireland it should be possible to acquire his birth record. Do you have Michael on any other Census? Regards Frances1

  • Thank you so much Frances, yes he did continue to use his real name Shaughnessy. I found him on an English census 1911 in Derbyshire with his wife Jane Arthur and children Agnes and Ciceley. I beleive he married in 1903 in Derbyshire, Thank once again for your help.

  • Hi Allyson there is a very comphrensive Tree on ancestry. Gives a copy of Marriage record for Michaels father Patrick to Bridget McLoughlin

    Marriage took place in 1871 in Parish of Mountbellew. Patrick was age 32 & Bridget age 25.

    Fathers were Michael Shaughnessy & Thomas McLoughlin. Witnesses John Healy & Ellen McLoughlin.

    Patrick & Bridget may be on 1901 census www.nationalarchives.ie
