My gr gr  gr grandfather was Patrick Keating (daughter was Maria - my gr gr grandmother).  I have found a Patrick Keating in Brackery South in the Griffiths Eval - 1855 (thanks to Christy).  I am thinking that this may be the right person.

However, I have also found a Patrick Keating in the 1836 Tithe Applotment Books, living in Gartnasillagh Townland.  I haven't seen this townland name anywhere else except on a list of Poor Law Unions.  Can anyone help me find this townland?

Thanks very much for your help.

  • Hello again,

I neglected to mention that Gartnasillagh is in the Tynagh Parish.

    Many thanks!

  • Hi,

Therese here again. The correct spelling of the townsland in Tynagh is Gortnasillagh. Tynagh is a parish in East Galway.  At the google search for "Tithe Collection in ireland" I found the link "Ireland Tithe Applotment Books".  There I found the original document where Pat keating is listed as having paid tithe in 1826.  I also found the original document for Griffith's Valuation where Patrick Keating is listed as a tenant farmer in Brackery South which would be an adjoining townsland. I have left a message with the Parish Priest regarding matching church recoirds.  Should you ever decide to visit Tynagh you would be very welcome.

    Kind regards

  • Hello Therese,

Thanks very much for verifying that information and for finding that Pat Keating paid tithe in 1826, which is earlier than the information which I had.  I would be very interested in knowing what church records the Parish Priest could find about Patrick Keating which may link these two Patrick Keating listings (Gortnasillagh and Brackery South).  Also, maybe he will find something about the spouses or children?  That would be especially wonderful!

I hope I will be able to come to Ireland before too long, and of course, I would love to visit Tynagh!

Thank you again and hoping to have some other news after the priest checks the records.

    Sincerely,

    Cindy

  • Hi Cindy,

    Therese here again.

According to parish records Patrick Keating's wife's  (He of Gortnasillagh) name was Sally Molloy.

They had four children, Pat, Edmund, Margaret and Brigid.

Maybe the latter Pat is the one who later turned up in Brackery South.

Hope this helps and would be delighted to hear from you again.

  • Hello again, Therese,

Thank you so much for the interesting information you sent me.  However, I need to make the connection somehow between this Patrick Keating, and my own great grandmother, Maria Keating.  What I know, is that Maria Keating was born c. 1840 and was supposed to be from Tynagh area.  Her father's name was Patrick Keating and her mother's name was Mary (don't know her maiden name).  She married Michael Burke in about 1860 and lived in Loughrea Parish afterwards.  I have reason to think that Michael Burke also came from the Tynagh area but I don't know this for sure.

Is there any way you could find which family Maria Keating was from?  Since her mother's first name was Mary, that could help.  I would love to know the names of her brothers/sisters as well.  Perhaps they would be in the Tynagh parish records too.

Thanks very much for your help and I hope to hear from you soon.

    Sincerely,

    Cindy

  • Hi again Cindy

Sorry,  but so far I have been ubable to find information about Maria Keating.

She is not listed in the baptismal records for Tynagh.  However the Parish Priest suggested I try the neighbouring Parish of Duniry.  At the moment the P.P. there is unavailable.  At the earliest opportunity I will contact the Heritage Centre in Woodford  who may have that information.

    Regards

  • Hi Cindy

I have phoned the parochial house in Loughrea re.this query. Will hear back from them on Monday.

Meanwhile, I have been in touch again with the P.P. in Tynagh and he says that when Patrick Keating married Mary Healy, the ceremony and therefore the records,  would have been held in the bride's parish.  The civil marriage registration records are available from the General Register Office. These start from 1864 ( too late !).  You can access the website here htpp://www.groireland.ie/research.htm and hope for the best. Best of luck Cindy.

    Regards

  • Hello again, Therese,

Thanks again for the help you've given me.  I will check the website you sent me.  Actually, I don't know for sure if Patrick Keating married Mary Healy and if these are the right parents of Maria Keating.  I'm hoping to find some confirmation of this.

I'll be looking forward to getting any news that you may get from the Loughrea parochial house.  Also, will you still be contacting the Woodford centre at all about Maria Keating to know if they have any information about her family?

Thank you very much again. ( I hope I'll find the answers eventually to some of these questions!)

    Best regards,

    Cindy
