I am searching for my forbearers in Tynagh, Loughrea, and Kilcloony (Town Parks). The evidence that I have gathered and the statistical analysis that I have done leads me to believe they are from this area. My 3rd Great Grandfather Patrick Melody b abt. 1805 and his brother Michael Richard Melody b. abt. 1823 were both blacksmiths and immigrated to the United States. In 1850 they are both in the same household in Charlotte, Chautauqua, New York. Patrick’s first wife was Bridget Larkin and second wife was Margaret Garrigan. Michael’s wife was Ann Garrigan. Both had children that fought in the US Civil War.
Patrick leaves evidence that he was from Loughrea, County Galway and immigrates about 1837. He also states his father was a blacksmith. Michael Richard leaves evidence that he was from Tynagh, County Galway and his father’s name was Thomas. In Griffiths Evaluations there is a woman Mary Meledy or Melody who is the lessor of properties in Loughrea and Tynagh. She is also a middle lessor on a forge in Ballinsloe. I believe this to be the same Mary.
Melody and its variants is not a common name in Galway. Might someone have some information they could shed on this issue? Any assistance would be appreciated. This same message will be posted in all three parishes message boards.
