Hello, my name is Katrina Kuhn Lunsford.
My 2x's great grandfather Thomas Solon was born in Galway Ireland. I believe I found him to be born April 21, 1836 in Tynag parish, Co. Galway in the Diocese of Clonfert. It lists his parents as Lawrence Solon and Mary Geoghegan. They were married February 18, 1832. I am trying to find out how to obtain a certificate of baptisms and marriage. There are three more children: Patrick Solon, born January 13, 1834, Mick Solon, born March of 1839 and Maria Solon, born July 21, 1841. St Lawrence Catholic Church.
The family story is that they fled Galway, Ireland when Thomas was 10 years of age (1846-1847). The British had burned the family home. This is during the famine as well. Stories may tend to exaggerate, but hold truths. This is all the information I have.
I have searched church records for every parish in Galway, Roscommon and most of Mayo. I found some Solan's in Mayo. Nothing in Roscommon. The Solan's in Mayo have no given names that match any of my Solon's. Mine are all in Tynagh.
I do not know where they went before arriving in America. 1860 Census is first showing of Lawrence with son Mick (Michael). Only one Census with Thomas, married to Margaret Kearney (born in Baltimore, Maryland) They were married in Baltimore, September 6, 1869.
Any help/assist woiuld be greatly appreciated. Trying to get documentation before loading anyone to my tree. Eliminates inaccuracy.
Thankyou in advance for any help.
Katrina

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Here is a link to the parish register for Tynagh parish http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0339 Marriages start in 1809 and baptisms in 1816. You can look up the records on the register which is the best documentation you can find. If you wrote to the church and asked for a baptismal or marriage record, they would go to this same register to prepare the records and of course, you would need to give them an offering for their work-- bottom line look up the records on the register.
You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing and possibly you will match others who have Solan or Geoghegan connections.
I did look at the 1901 census and found this Solan family in Tynagh civil parish. Not sure how this family is connected to your Solans.

Thank you Roger.
I have gone through all the parish records of Galway, mayo, Roscommon, Clare, Offaly and halfway through Tipperary. All of my Solon's are in Tynagh parish and Solan's are in Achonry, Co. Mayo. I do not know if the Solan's and Solon's are related. my guess is yes. Outside of these to parishes in two seperate Counties. these are the only ones I have come across.
It makes you wonder if they are realted, what caused the spelling difference. Since they are concentrated in these two areas and nowhere else thus far, where did the family originate? Did they come from somewhere else in the past and just landed in a specific era. Not many are left in Ireland. England has a bunch of them. I am sure they all fled there to find work and food during the famine.
I am trying to confirm where to write for records of baptisms and marriages. I think the name of the church is St. Lawrence in Tynagh.
Thanks again,
Katrina
