I am trying to locate the Ancestry of my 3x Great Grandfather Edmund Fitzmaurice who may have been born in 1808 Adfert, kerry

He trained to be an Excise Officer and on his papers, which I received from The National Archives, it states he was born in Adfert, Kerry.

His wife Mary (perhaps Williams) came from Wales.  I think they may have been married in 1836.

In 1837 Eliza their first child was born and on the 1851 English Census she says she was born in Cork.

In 1840 David Fitzmaurice, who is my direct ancestor, was baptised on 17th May 1840 in Tralee. This info came from an Irish online web.

A third child, Edmund was born in 1843 and on the 1851 Census it says he came from Formoy County Cork.

It may be that Edmund Fitzmaurice the elder travelled around because of his occupation.

On the 1851 English Census his wife states she is a widow.

I have been unable to locate a Marriage or a Death for Edmund.  It could be as it was about the time of the Potato Famine this may have affected all the family.  The rest of the family came back to England and resided in Staffordshire.

I am not sure where to gain further info.  It does seem that the Fitzmaurice name was connected to a high status family but I am not sure.

Any help would be appreciated.

Chris

  • Hello Maureen

Thank you for that information.  I have been on it many times and the only record I found was the baptism of my Great great grandfather David Fitzmaurice.  He was baptised at Tralee Parish Church 17th May 1840.  IT says further info on the records but I am unable to invetigate this or how.

I have spent many hours trying in varios ways to locate more info, that I have given up on that site for the time being.

I would have though that had he died before the 1850 uk census which is the one his wife and family are on, then I am presuming he died in Ireland.

Due to the responsibility of his work EXCISE OFFICER I thought it may have been in a local a paper.  I cannot find a marraige or a death for him either.

    Regards

  • Hi Chris

    Have you tried https://www.familysearch.org/

I have been and tried it it with first just Fitzmaurice (no first name) and then added a birth place search again then a small birthdate range then widened the range it gives varying results

then underneath where you enter the name you will see restrict records to "Location/Type/ Batch number

click on Type and select one at a time for example it brings up Tithe Applotments and Tax assessments but it will also bring up other people not connected it is FREE too.

when you click(on the left side) on the arrow it shows details - then if (on the right of that page it shows an image of a camera - click on the persons name it shows the scanned image of the record

an the church records i also tried just putting in a surname and thats all it brings up a lot more Fitzmaurice with different spellings

    Hope this helps

    Hello Maurine

    Thank you very much

I have used Family search in the past but I will try the info you have provided.  When I win the lottery I will have my own researcher who will take me by the hand into the relevant Irish records and places of interest!!!

last year I recently found my long lost Polish family through Ancestry.co.uk and I am visting them this year, so who knows where i may end up next.

    Regards

  • Hello Maureen

The only thing I have found is this but on the 1851 Census his wife says she is a widow.  I have found nothing else but will keep trying.
