Hi,

I'm looking for any information that will help me find out more about John Murphy (who was apparently a publican in Casteisland before buying (?) a farm in Ranaleen. He married Julia Mahoney / Mahony, and their children included:

Timothy Murphy 1827 born/christened Currow or Castleisland, Kerry

Laurence Murphy, 1835

Mary Murphy 1837

Johanna Murphy 1840

John Murphy 1843 christened Currow?

Daniel Murphy b c1846

Joseph Murphy

James Murphy

Generally the information I have from other family members lists the children as being born in Ranaleen and christened in Currow.

In 1864 Daniel, Mary & Johanna Murphy and cousin Johanna O’Sullivan left Ireland for Australia on the Great Britain.

I went to www.irishgenealogy.ie which is a free Irish government site and found the baptismal records for Mary in July 1837 and John in May 1843. Both baptisms were in the Kileentierna RC church. I also found a baptismal record on March 5 th 1835 for a Honora Murphy in the Castleisland RC church.

Ranaleen townland is actually in Kileentierna parish which is to the south of Castleisland parish. I'm guessing that Ranaleen is on the border of the two parishes.

I also looked at the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kileentierna parish and there was a John Murphy listed in Ranaleen townland.

  • Hi Roger,

that's fantastic, thank you! I hadn't realised there was a free site like that, that's opened up a lot more leads.

  • Hi Mia,

I randomly came across this page on Google. I am a descendant from Dan Murphy who came out to Australia. I live in Melbourne. I'm currently travelling through Ireland and heading to Ranaleen this week. Would love to know any history or family lines you've come across, my father Paul has a lot of information of the families who came out to Australia. Thanks!

  • Hi Matt,

I'm guessing that my mum is your dad's cousin. If so, we don't have much more information than he does, but you're welcome to what we have! Will you be passing through London at all?

    Cheers, Mia
