Hello,

My name is Marilyn Brown and my great-grandmother was one Catherine (Kate) Moynihan, born in Castleisland, Co. Kerry around 1870. I have a marriage certificate for her and my great-grandfather, Thomas Newton. They married in St. Michael's Church, Limerick on 6th May, 1893. Thomas was in the Army as a driver for the Royal Artillery, stationed at the Ordnance Barracks in Limerick.

Kate's father is listed as Jeremiah Moynihan (deceased), a Labourer. Her mother is not listed, but one of the witnesses was a Hannah Moynihan, possibly a sister?

They moved over to Shoeburyness, Essex, UK and had all their children there. My grandfather, John Frederick Newton, was my mother's father.

I have found baptism records for a Cath Moynihan on Family Search, but I'm not sure if that is the right person. The mother on that record is a Cath. Connell and the Christening was on 18 June 1869 at the Roman Catholic Church, Castleisland.

Any information would be most helpful. Thank you from Australia!

Marilyn

  • Hi Joan,

    Sorry I haven't replied earlier - can't believe it's April already!

Yes, this does confirm baptism records I have found on the Moynihan family. The one born in 1871 is Hannah, born 20 March. Her name appears as a Witness on Catherine Moynihan and Thomas Newton's marriage certificate, so that's how I figured out where to look as I now had 3 people's names from that family (I have attached the scan of the certificate for you to look at).

Thank you for the further information on her sister Mary - I will have a look at the Census record.

Is there any way of finding out about the deaths of Jeremiah and Catherine and where they are buried? I would have thought they would stay in the same area (particularly as Jeremiah is listed as a "Labourer" - deceased) on the marriage cert.

How lovely to have those memories of the cottages! Really puts things into context...

Thanks once again for your help.

    Kind Regards to you,

    Marilyn
