Hello! I have seen the Irish church records for Dennis Casey marrying Honora O'Brien in February of 1828 in Duagh. They are my great-great-grandparents. According to the dates on their gravestones, Honora was 12 when she was married! That seems remarkably young though the first child didn't come along until she was 17. They apparently emigrated with their children and possibly siblings. I would like any information available about where they may have lived in Duagh and any family they may have left behind.

I am also looking for information on the O'Hern And Pendergest families. Patrick O'Hern was born to Jeremiah O'Hern and his wife Catharine Pendergest also from Duagh. All 4 families moved to the US around the same time, settled within a few miles of each other and were united in the marriage of Patrick and Ellen Casey in 1857 in Cuba, New York.  I am looking for any leads on these families.

Thank you very much, Mary Thomas of Caledonia, New York

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

www.irishgenealogy.ie is a free site which has church records for Co. Kerry including Duagh RC parish. I located the marriage record and seven baptismal records for Denis and Honora. The latest was Edmund in November 1848. Preumably the family left Ireland soon after. None of the records showed a location.

I also looked at the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of housheold listing and there were two Casey records. Possibly the Denis Casey family lived in one of those townlands.

I was unable to find any information on the O'Herns and Pendergasts. Do you have any other info?

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Roger, Thank you so much for your research and guidance! I will follow your advice as soon as I have a chance! I had not seen all of the baptismal records for the children and that helps me with narrowing down when they emigrated. The info I have on the O'Herns are that they are from the Lakes of Killarney area ( from an obituary) but that's all I know. The gravestones for the Casey's say they are from Duagh or I wouldn't know where to find them either. The O'Hern family went on to raise many children (along with the Casey's) and quite a few of their son's became priests, including one son who became the bishop of Rochester, NY.  I plan to do DNA testing soon! This is all quite exciting. Thanks so much for your advice!  Mary Thomas

  • Hello, my name is Donna Patrice O'Hern. I live in New Jersey and come from the line of Jeremiah and Catherine O'Hern. I've only begun doing research on my father's paternal family although I do have a  list of O'Hern's going back quite a few generations here in America. I know the post from Mary Thomas is from a number of years ago but would be interested in sharing what I know from my uncles records.

  • Hi Donna!

it is wonderful to meet you and thank you for your reply. I have a public family tree on Ancestry.com under the name “Mary Webster Thomas” or “valleylight”. Please feel free to reference it.

I live in western NY and am now a retired educator. I’d be happy to correspond with you via email at valleylight@frontiernet.net. I can also share what info that I have. Here is my line from the O’Herns of Olean/Hinsdale NY: Jeremiah O’Hern/Catherine Pendergest > Patrick O’Hern / Ellen Casey > Catherine O’Hern / Henry Webster > Edwin Leo Webster / May Brogan > Jack Webster / Alice Jarnot > Mary Webster Thomas (me). Each generation had many, many children so we are probably related through one of the siblings along the way. Jeremiah and Catherine are my 3rd great grandparents.

Have you done any DNA testing? I would love to find you on my list of cousins if you have. Thanks for taking the time to share any info. Best wishes, Mary
