Hi everyone,

I have been researching my Lyons/Dillane family for a number of years now and have come to a dead end.  My g g grandparents were John Lyons and Mary Dillane.  Their children were born in Duagh parish, Hannah b1844, Ellen b1850, Patrick (my g grandfather) b1856, Denis b1860 and Joanna b1863.  I have been trying to locate their parents marriage record without any success and am at a loss to know where to go next.  If anyone has any advice I would be most grateful.

  • While I assumed that you searched churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie, I checked too and found nothing but the baptisms of their children. If you have not visited the site, you might find more details about their children.

I have a cousin who spent quite awhile at St Brigid's Church examining parish records last year. In spite of this, he was unable to locate many marriage records at all. The only ones he could locate were already available from the church records site. Sadly, I suspect you may not be able to locate a record. Civil records were not kept until circa 1864 in this area.

  • Thanks for that.  Yes I did search genealogy.ie.  It's a shame about the church marriage records.  Do they keep many burial records?  That's another search I need to do.

  • I am very sure they did not keep burial records for the period in question. There were none for my families during the 19th century. I could ask my cousin if he noticed any, but I am almost certain that the answer is no.

  • I've got Ellen Lyons as b in 1841. Not sure where I got that information from though at the moment, so could definately be incorrect!

  • Hi Claire,

If you look at www.irishgenealogy.ie you can see all the childrens baptism records in Duagh parish.  There are two patricks one died young the second my g g grandfather b1856 was a head constable in the Royal Irish Constabulary.  His brother Denis was also in the R.I.C. He was unmarried and after his retirement he lived with his sister Hannah and her husband Daniel Collins, you can see them on the 1901/1911 Irish census.
