Name Birth Birthplace

Timothy F Twohig (Sullivan) 19 December 1857   Maulnaskehy, Rossnacaheragh

John A. Twohig (Sullivan)       2 March 1859         Maulnaskehy, Rossnacaheragh

Patrick Twohig (Sullivan)      27 April 1861            Maulnaskehy, Rossnacaheragh

Catherine Twohig (Sullivan) 14 January 1863       Maulnaskehy, Rossnacaheragh

Julia Twohig (Sullivan)         25 December 1864   Maulnaskehy, Rossnacaheragh

Andrew Twohig (Sullivan)    20 February 1867     Maulnaskehy,  Rossnacaheragh

Dennis Twohig (Sullivan)     18 April 1869            Maulnaskehy, Rossnacaheragh

Michael Twohig (Sullivan)    21 October 1871      Maulnaskehy, Rossnacaheragh

Maria Twohig (Sullivan)        3   October 1874      Maulnaskehy, Rossnacaheragh

Andrew Twohig and Mary (Houlihan) Twohig arrived on 24 May 1886 in New York City with their sons Andrew Jr. and Dennis; their passenger list identifying them as Andrew and Mary Sullivan, they made their way to Lincoln, Rhode Island where their 8 oldest children were already living and using the name Sullivan. Andrew's parents were listed as Timothy Sullivan and Catherine ? there was no maiden name on the death certificate. Mary (Houlihan) Sulivan's father was listed as Daniel Holland on her death certificate, but no mother was given. Whelan translates as Houlihan and Holland is a variant of Houlihan so the family name is definately Houlihan.

I have a letter dated 1926 that validates Andrew's family name is Twohig; it is from a Mrs. Kate (Twohig) Arundel to "My Loving Cousin Julia" who is my great, great Aunt Julia (Twohig) Shunney her sister Maria Twohig Dacey is my great, grandmother and she too mentioned that the family name is "Twohig which is Gaelic for Sullivan" whether this is true or not is currently being looked into and new info on this will be added as it becomes available.

Thanks!     Maria

  • Hi Tony,

I have made some progress on the Sullivan & Whalen end of things! A couple of weeks ago while looking for a baptism record for some Gibbons I’m related to in the same area as the Arundel’s I discovered the online parish records for my great, great grandparents Andrew Twohig (Sullivan) and Mary Houlihan (Whelan).  I need to update the message above to read Twohig and Houlihan & will get to it shortly! My great, great, great grandparents were Timothy Twohig and Catherine Sullivan married 6 June 1831 Schull West (Goleen) and their children were Andrew, John, Mary, Timothy, Catherine and Patrick if my research is right!

I am the great, granddaughter of Andrew and Mary’s daughter Mary (Twohig) Dacey and my 2nd cousin James McCaffrey is the great, grandson of their daughter Julia (Twohig) Shunney. James sent me a copy of a letter his great, grandmother Julia received from her cousin Mrs. Harry Arundel who is newly married (2 years)  at the time the letter was written 26 Oct 1926. The information I’m looking for related to the Arundel’s has to do with the identity of the letter writer who addresses my great, great Aunt Julia as “My Most Loving Cousin Julia” they were apparently very close to one another; however, she signs the letter as Mrs. Harry Arundel which doesn’t give much information as to her identity such as a first name would. Mrs Harry Arundel also says that her husband is an “Arundel boy next door” and that Julia’s mother new his father well “Dade Arundel” so the cousin is very near to home. I’m hoping to discover the identity of the writer because we would like to know if she is a cousin from the Twohig side of the family or the Houlihan side of the family.  At the bottom of the letter shows what my cousin has done to locate information on the Arundel’s and the identy of Mrs. Harry Arundel, also you we see the confusion regarding how she is related to the Twohigs and or Houlihan’s.

I’ve attached a copy of the letter for you to read any information you can give will be appreciated!

    Thanks!   Maria

  • Hi Tony,

I’ll definitely look at your tree; since I just found a NEW Twohig branch for my family tree which is on ancestry.com. If you are interested in viewing my tree all I need is your email and I can send you an invite to the tree on ancestry.com.

Just so I have some idea of where your Twohigs fit on the family tree; are you related to Timothy Twohig and Catherine Sullivan’s children or are you related to one of great, great, great grandpa Timothy Twohig’s siblings?

I let my cousin Jim know you would like a copy of the original letter without all the extra stuff on the bottom. I’ll get it to you as soon as he emails it to me!

  • Hi Tony,

    My email address is msbonbon65@hotmail.com

I believe my great, great grandfather Andrew Twohig’s brother John Twohig Schull West (Goleen) 1834 married a Mary O’Donovan or Donovan the name is shown both ways depending on the documentation you are looking at i.e. marriage record or birth record. I have their children as Andrew, Denis, Timothy, Patrick, Peter, and Jeremiah does this sound right to you?
