Hi Folks,

I am very much hoping that somebody maybe able to help me, in my search for my Irish Ancestry.

I am hoping to find anyone who might have a knowledge of a Patrick Sullivan and a Mary Harrington in their tree.

Patrick Sullivan and Mary Harrington were married in 1836 in Kilgarvan Parish Kerry, and went on to have the following children,

Julia 1840

John 1842 Cregeen

Denis 1844 Cregeen

Patrick 1846 Cregeen

Daniel 1849 Cahir

Mary 1852 Cahir

Catherine 1854 Cahir

It would be great news for me if anybody has any information regarding this family, as after much painstaking research i do beleive they might be my ancestors.

Thank you in anticipation,

Kind regards,

Lewis Sullivan.

I'm trying to determine how we may assist you. I assume Patrick and Mary stayed in Ireland. How about their children? I note that Patrick is listed in the 1852 Griffiths Valuation for Kilgarvan parish. The 1901 census for Caher shows four Sullivan families. Not sure if they are connected to Patrick and Mary.

Have you taken a standard DNA test to see if you get matches with close relatives from your Sullivan/Harrington line.

  • Hi Roger,

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Patrick and Mary did stay in Ireland but Patrick is assumed dead by 1860 going off a marriage Cert for son John.

John and brother Daniel moved to South Wales UK to a town called Merthyr tydfil and show up on the 1861 census together. We loose Daniel after 1871 but John my direct ancestor is with us until 1901.

Unfortunately neither of them ever give a county of Birth on the censuses throughout their lives but through alot of painstaking elimination, we were left with two families that could be ours. One in Schull and one in Kilgarvan.

This conclusion was reached by taking John and Daniels ages from the 1861 census they are found on together and looking for them born to a Patrick near these dates and in the sane location. Patrick was listed as father on Johns marriage cert.

My grandad did a DNA test and that ruled out Schull as we'd made contact with a family living there who had the same family we'd found but we didn't match.

So that leaves Kilgarvan. Unfortunately no matches prove this yet.

    Kind regards,

    Lewis.

  • Hi Lewis,

I came across your message when researching the Harrington's. We have lots of Harrington/Sullivan intermarriages and the names are very similar of the children. So maybe relations? Hope this helps.
