Hello, we are excited to share that myself and my adult aged daughter are coming to Ireland 1st Week of Oct 2023 for 6 days! It'll be my 3rd time back to Ireland. My daughter's first.

We are decedents of the Fitzgerald & Reidy bloodline from Kerry Co. Our great grandpa, James Fitzgerald, was baptized/born on Jan 20th, 1805, in Gortshanafa, Kerry, Ireland. We recently got our certified copy of the Baptism from Fr. John Buckley in Killeentierna Parish in Killarney. His parents were James Fitzgerald and Mary Reidy, if anyone would have any info on this family tree. Attached image of our family tree, starting from Jame's certificate to my daughter. I'm a red head in that photo, but second attachment is me now with short dark hair.

We'd love to meet relatives when we come, and are open to connect with a volunteer who would be interested. Feel welcome to reply and start any conversations and/or research points you might know of. Excited to connect!

If you have not done so already, please complete the attached form regarding your trip to Ireland  https://www.irelandxo.com/meet-and-greet

I don't know if we have a volunteer in the area but the form will notify our Administrator regarding your visit.

By the way, if I understood your ancestral chart correctly, James Fitzgerald born 1905 would be the gr-gr-gr grandfather to Angeline.

The correct spelling of the townland is Gortshanavoge. I checked the 1911 census and there were eleven households including an older Fitzgerald couple.

Which ancestor left Ireland? If we knew that info it will be easier to search for connections down thru the years.

  • Thank you Roger, Eileen, and Patricia. It is so nice to have response and some more insight.

Roger, I'll fill that form out and get that started.
As for the birth/baptism year of my great, great, great grand father, James, his birth year is sometime between 1799-1805. I share that due to his Baptism is Jan 20th,1805, and in records and census here in the States he varies in year entry between 1799-1805. Hence, he was baptized in 1805, not 1905. He is the one who left Ireland. Yes, he is my 3rd gen great grand father, which my name is Angeline. His daughter (my gr. gr. Grandma) is named Angeline to whom I'm named after.) In regards to the village that James was from and within proximity of the baptism record, it is called Gortshanafa, and is on the map in Ireland - close to where he would have been baptized. When I searched for the other spelling "Gortshavavoge" no such place came up on the map. Unless the way I spell it and how it shows up on the Google map is the English form, and your form is Irish language. Could that be? If it is then I'd be sure the 1911 Fitzgeralds you found may be my blood relations. To note, why there is a big jump in years from my gr. gr. grandma Angeline who was born in New York in 1843, is because her son, my great grandpa Clarkson ended up having 25 kids between three marriages (3 of his kids died at birth, so 22 lived on). So, my grandpa Glenroie was his 2nd to last child born. Clarkson was 65 when my grandpa was born. Hence, the gap in years and making my gr. gr. grandma so far removed in years from me. But to recap, it is my gr. gr. gr. grandpa James Fitzgerald from Kerry Co. who left Ireland.

Eileen, thank you for that link. This is the document that I have already had the Parish certify and forward to me that I now have in possession. Thank you for contributing to the conversation. I greatly appreciate any insight.

Patricia, the link you placed doesn't work. When I tried to manually put it in my Mac computer warned it was not safe to visit. Not sure why, but that link didn't work for that reason. However, the saerch for "Tithe Applotments in 1827 show a James REIDY in Killeentierna" may be a help. I'll look into that lead. Thank you.

  • Angeline:

I just used Google Maps and Gortshanavoge is 1.8 miles southwest of Killeentierna.

If James was baptized on January 20 1805, you can be sure that he was born a few days before the baptismal date. The fact that the census ages varied is to be expected. Exactness of age was not important in the 19th century and people didn't always give their correct age.

  • Thank you, Roger. I did a different search and you are right, I found Gortshanavoge in the same spot basically as Gortshanafa. Maybe one version is English and the other Irish. I've a gut feeling his birth for sure was before the Baptism date. Thanks!

  • Hi Angeline,

I wonder do you have the names of any of James' siblings? The names and order of his children would also be useful. Did he marry a Co Kerry woman? Do you know if he travelled with any friends or relatives when he left Ireland? This information might help in the search.

What days do you intend spending in Kerry? I may be available to meet you for coffee!

    Best Regards,
