I am trying to trace further details of Walter Glover whose son was born in Castletownbere in 1822.

Walter is also mentioned in the record of his daughter's marriage in Killeeternia 1828. His occupation is listed as a soldier.

Does anyone have any ideas where I might trace any information on Walter. If he was a soldier, what was he doing in Castletownbere in 1822 ??
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I coud not see a parish listed on this site for Castletownbere. I looked under Cork and Kerry and couldn't find anything

Hello Jan,
If your ancestor was a soldier then his record might be found in the English National Archives which has more than 800 muster books and paylists of Irish county militia and volunteer regiments. War Office
no. wo13/2574 3370, dating from the end of the 18th century to the late 19th century.

Thanks a million Joan, that information is fascinating to say the least. The idea that one of my ancestors was around Bere Island with Wolfe Tone and General Hoche has me even more determined to find out more about him. I have to agree that this has to be the reason why Walter was in that part of the world in the 1820s. In order to search the military records at Kew I first need to find out what regiments were there at the time. That's another days work I suppose. Many thanks again for all your help
