My ancestor Martin Moriarty lived near Caragh Lake in the townland of Muingaphuca. He was born around 1786 and married Honora Sullivan around 1810. I am descended from his son James Moriarty who married Mary Cronin (daughter of Cornelius Cronin and Julia Shea from Shronahiree and later Cloghera, Knockane).
These Moriartys were often refered to as "Buony" in the church records, to distinguish them from other Moriartys in the area. Another common nickname for Moriartys around there was "Caulea."
Although there were several Buony families in that part of Killorglin in the early- to mid-1800s, there seemed to be a greater concentration of them in neighboring Glenbeigh.
What I would like to know is what exactly does "Buony" mean? Do Moriarty families in the area still call themselves by that nickname? Are there any of Martin Moriarty's descendants in the Caragh Lake area today?

hello, I am in the process of tracking down a Patrick Bouni who was godfather to my 3rd gr grandmother's brother (how's that for distant relative) in Cullenagh, Cork. I found a little note saying that Bouni is a branch name for Mahoney? Have others found that? Sue
