My name is John Hayes and I’m searching for information on my great great grandmother.

Her headstone in Canada says she died in 1878 at the age of 88 which would make her birth date 1790. On her headstone, it says she was a native of  her beloved Kerry Ireland.

She came to Canada with three boys Thomas, Patrick and James in1827. No husband arrived in Canada. The husband and/or other children may have died during the voyage. See info below about a catholic marriage which I believe to be hers.

Is there someone I could contact who has knowledge of the Hurley family that may help? If I can get enough on her, we plan to travel to Ireland next spring to see the homeland.

Thanks in advance

John Hayes

  • Hi John

There are 2 baptism records of Catherine Hurley in 1791 & 1792 on www.irishgenealogy.ie/ ( a free site)

The father's name is Timothy & mother Ellen but a different surname on each BUT almost the same witnesses

  • There was a marriage to Cornelius Hayes of Laharn in 1808. I wonder which Catherine (1791 or 1792) was involved.

In addition, she arrived in Canada in 1827 and in the 1851 census she classified herself as a window. I can't find where she lived or whar happened to her husband. She had three sons named Thomas, Patrick & James with her when she arrived. My GGF, the oldest, was born in 1810 but I can't find any record.

I would like to visit the village where my ancestors came from. I need as much information as possible before going. It would be frustrating if I waste a lot of vacation time just wandering about trying to get a starting point.

    Thanks
