My 2-great grandfather, Garrett Edward FITZMORRIS, was born 1846-47, possibly in Listowel, Co. Kerry.  His parents were Edward FITZMORRIS (b. abt. 1795; d. before 1852) and Margret ____.  Margret was b. 7 Aug 1797 in Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick. Garrett was the youngest of four known children of Edward & Margret; they and their mother appear to have all emigrated to New York, USA, in 1852, after the death of father Edward.  Garrett married (about 1865-1869, in Erie or Cattaraugus Co., New York) Margaret PEARSE, who was b. 1846-49, possibly in Daugh, Co. Kerry; parents Maurice PEARSE and Mary COLLINS. However, there is also a possible baptism for Margaret PEARSE/PIERCE in records of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick on 29 March 1840. They also have a John PEARSE bapt. 16 June 1843, same parents.  I have visited Limerick and Kerry, but found no further information. I would like to correspond with anyone researching these names. Many thanks!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Hopefully others with Fitzmorris or Pearce connections will see your message and comment.

www.irishgenealogy.ie has the Co. Kerry church records. I did a lot of searching for Garrett in the Kerry records and I did not locate a record. I'm wondering if his year of birth was much earlier than 1846-1847. His mother would have been 50 when he was born. Also, the Listowel RC parish records go way back but there are a number of "gap" periods and possibly Garrett was baptized in a "gap" period and no record is available. Here is a link to the parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0678 You can see the years where records are not available on the index of the films.

  • Dear Roger -- Thank you, and I apologize for not seeing your response earlier.  Too many distractions and running off on tangents!  I just saw your message tonight, in checking the links in the recent article, Ten facts about Irish Gravestones | Ireland Reaching Out (irelandxo.com).  Thank you for the additional links for Kerry church records; I will definitely check those out!  And I'll try to remember to check back here more often, for further leads.  Thanks again!  -- Jenifer Johnson, Pennsylvania, USA
