Hi
i recently discovered my great grandfather and namesake is from Listowel, Kerry. His name was James Granville, born around 1878 and lived in house 18 (no street name) with his widowed mother Johanna, 3 brothers and a step brother at time of 1901 census.
Sometime later James emigrated to New Zealand where he married and had four children, the youngest of whom was my grandfather. James eventually split with his wife and put the youngest 2 children in an orphanage then died some time later. My grandfather would never speak of his father hence me only finding this out recently through research.
I’m visiting Listowel in April and would appreciate any advice on how to find more information about this family.
Many thanks in advance
Marc

Marc,
I looked at the 1901 census to find the names of Johann's children- James, Nicholas, Jeremiah, and Patrick. Nicholas and Jeremiah were twins. I searched Irishgenealogy (a free website), the Church Record tab and found the children's baptisms. The dates are off especially your James. their parents were Thomas Granville and Johanna Nolan- James 1867, Nicholas 1874, Jeremiah 1874, and Patrick 1877. They were all born in Ballygologue, Listowel.
There is an 1867 marriage record for Thomas and Johanna.
Area - KERRY (RC) , Parish/Church/Congregation - LIXNAW
Marriage of THOMAS GRANVILLE of CUNNIGAR and JOHANNA NOLAN of NR on 3 March 1867

Marc,
Thomas and Johannas civil marriage record. Note, Thomas was living in Listowel. He was a widower and his father's name was John. Thomas' oldest son was John, born 1855, per the 1901 census.
