My relatives came to Canada in 1847. Patrick Hussey (b 1814), his wife Bridget Sheehan (b 1810) came with 3 sons Pat, Jack, Edward and probably a daughter.

Edward died at sea coming over. Death record for Pat (my great grandfather) idicates he was born in county Kerry. I do not have a parish or townland.

Looking at the name distribution in Kerry at that time for Hussey/Sheehan it looks like the highest probability would be in the Sneem, Caherdaniel area.

Planning a trip to Ireland next spring.

Any help much appreciated, Bob

  • I located a very possible marriage for Patrick & Bridget on the free IrishGenealogy website in Ballyferriter RC parish. The parish is located at the western end of the Dingle penisula. Sheehan to Sheehy would be a minor variation... (Caherdaniel is located near to Sneem on the RIng of Kerry)

see : Marriage of Patrick Hussey and Brigid Sheehy on 19 November 1837

also listed in the same parish are baptisms for several of their children (see here), including John 1838,  Michael 1839, Johanna 1842, Mary 1844.There could be other children listed under spelling variations. All give residence as 'Clahanduff' which is likely a reference to the townland of Cloghaneduff (placename database). Jack is oftena 'nickname' for John.

Do you have estimates of years of birth for the children from Canadian sources ?

  • I have followed up on your suggestions and I'm quite sure these are my relatives ! I have been looking a long time for them. Things make sense now. I will be spending time in this area when I travel to Ireland in June. Knowing where to look now really allows one to focus. I can't thank you enough for taking the time to help me.

    Regards, Bob
