Hello

My GG-grandparents were Jacobus/James Manix and Johanna Fenaughty. They married in Tralee on 19 Sept 1857, had three children in Ireland before emigrating to Victoria, Australia aboard the 'Bates Family' departed Liverpool on 9 March 1863 and arrived Melbourne on 7 June 1863.

James' father was Maurice and that is a family name that has continued down the generations (including my grandfather).

On their marriage record it states that Jacobus is from Bally Mullen and I'm wondering where that is.

I've also found a baptism record for a James Mannix (father Maurice) with an address of Logher, Annascaul. This may or may not be the right James Mannix.

I'll be in Tralee from May 8 for a few days and looking forward to have a good look around, and maybe meet some people!

Looking forward to hearing any thoughts you might have on my ancestors and where they came from.

Many thanks

Catherine

  • Catherine,

If I have found the correct baptism for James, I noticed there were several children born to a Maurice Mannix and Elizabeth Sheehan in Tralee at this same time. I wonder if Bridget was incorrectly transcribed or originally written and should have been Elizabeth. I found on Irishgenealogy that James' wedding record incorrectly identifies him as John.

  • Dear Mary

Thankyou so much for the information about Ballymullen - I should have thought to look that up myself. It looks like it's now a small suburb of Tralee with a large vacant block!

And thank you for trying to find my elusive James. I didn't think I had his mother's name but when I checked his death certificate (he died in Aust in 1909) his mother's name is given as Margaret Mannix formerly Dowd. It may be incorrect but I doubt if he was born in 1825 as that would have made him 32 when he married - not impossible but not very likely either. All the records I have point to his birthdate about 1834. I apologise for not giving you the information about his mother's name. I know most records were destroyed in the 1921 fire so I don't expect to find any records but it will be nice to stand on the soil at Ballymullen and know its where my ancestors once walked.

Thank you again, I am very appreciative.
