My gg-grandfather William Mansfield was born in Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry, c1811-16 to Joseph and Mary Mansfield.

His siblings were:

--Dorcas Mansfield, married Chas. Mansfield of Kenmare, emigrated with two sons to New York in 1836 on Ship Superior. Their children were Wm., Joseph, Charles, Dorcas, Elizabeth, Ann; four were born in NY. Dorcas and Chas. were both dead by the early 1850s. Their children all eventually settled in California.

--Joseph Mansfield, married Margaret, d. Kilgarvan, Kerry. He died in his forties and is buried in the old graveyard on the edge of Kenmare. Some of Joseph's descendants went to Australia.

My gg-grandfather William Mansfield sailed on the Ship Superior with Dorcas, Chas., and children in 1836 . He married twice, in NY, first to Catherine Collins. They had three sons: Wm. 1843, Joseph 1845-1879 (he served as a drummer boy in the Union army in the U.S. Civil War), James 1848-c1852. Catherine Collins Mansfield died in June 1851.

William married second to Ellen Collins, likely the sister of his first wife, Catherine, in June 1852. Their children were: Charles 1853-1900 (married Mary J. Fitzpatrick, an emigrant from Drumlane, Co. Cavan), John 1856 (died as infant), Mary 1860-1924. These children were baptized in St. Brigid's Catholic Church in Manhattan.

William Mansfield died in January 1864 in Manhattan and is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Queens, NY. Ellen Collins Mansfield died in 1892 in Manhattan and is also buried in Calvary. Next to her grave is that of Patrick Collins, likely her brother; according to his death notice in the NY Herald, he was a native of Dartrey, Co. Monaghan.

At the baptism of my g-grandfather Charles Mansfield in 1853, the witnesses were Mary McCarthy and Daniel Sullivan. I have traced Daniel Sullivan's family to Kilgarvan as well.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Looks like your ancestors were Church of Ireland when they were in Ireland.

If you go to this free site. www.irishgenealogy.ie. and search for Joseph Mansfield in Co. Kerry, you will find the baptismal records for Dorcas (1811) and young Joseph (1817) but no record for William. Possibly he was born before 1811 and records for the Kilgarvan C of I church don't go back that far.

If you just search for Mansfield in the Kilgarvan C of I parish, you will get a lot more records and possibly records for related family members.

Please consider adding your ancestors stories to our XO Chronicles site.
