My great grandfather was John H. Sullivan.  Family has always said he was born in Co. Kerry. His tombstone here in Blue Earth, MN, USA says he was born in 1832 in Ireland. Don't have a year for his immigration but it was sometime before the US Civil War.  He died in MN in 1897.  Family also always said his mother was a 'Fitzgerald'', his father was also John H. Sullivan and he had a sister Julia.  But there is no record of direct contact with any of these other family members. John H. Jr. came to Boston where he is said to have stayed with a relative who was a seamstress and then settled in Ohio working on a riverboat. In July 1855 he married Julia Lefund Lyons, also born in Kerry in 1838.. Her father was John Lyons and her mother is listed in US census as Hannorah Murphy Lyons.  John and Hannorah are thought to have had about 17 children.  .The Lyons family is thought to have come to the US about 1850 and settled in Ohio.

If any one can help me find the correct Sullivan and Lyons family in Ireland, I would be SO thrilled. .

  • Hello WIlma, I have been asked to look at the older queries and the best I can do it s John Sullivan (real Kerry name) mother Catherine Fitzgerald was baptised in parish of Castlemaine in 1828 on 16th August. Lots of Julias but only other one with mother Catherine Sullivan is in a parish some distance away, in case priest did not take maiden name but this is I think a bit far away, October 1832  baptism.

This couple appear to have had 8 children in Castlemaine, all John father and mother Catherine Fitzgerald, James 7th Mar 1831; Catherine 3rd May 1834; Mary 26 June 1836; Dermot 24th May 1825; William 4th August 1839; Timothy 10th Feb 1823 (witnessess were Alice and Anthony Godfrey) and finally Maurice 21 Dec 1841, only searched 1822 to 1842. You should be able to read the entries on this site for free but can only search by event and date, month and year and then read where possible. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0662

    Good Luck
