I have been researching my 2nd Great Grand Father, Timothy J Callahan and have currently reached a dead end.  Here is what I have been able to determine: Timothy J Callahan was born in 1853.  From United States Federal Census records, his headstone, and a U.S. naturalization record *etc.), I beleive he was born 4 November 1853.  His death record (as well as the US Census records) lists his birthplace as Ireland.  The death record lists his parents as John Callahan and Mary Neagle, both born in Ireland.

Timothy Callahan married Annie Howard in Haverhill, Massachusetts on 1 Nov 1877 and has several children (all born in Haverhill, MA):

  • John E Callahan 1878 – 1905
  • Timothy Joseph Callahan 1880 – 1930
  • Michael Joseph Callahan 1881 – 1936
  • Mary Callahan 1883 – 1887

  • Annie G Callahan 1887 – 1972

  • Daniel Joseph Callahan 1895 – 1936
  • Lillian Callahan 1897 –
  • Archibald Jerome Callahan 1899 – 1951

Searching for Timothy’s parents, John Callahan and Mary Neagle (or Nagle), I came across several Irish records listing other children born to John Callahan and Mary Nagle; I did not find one for Timothy.  Looking into the other children of John and Mary, I found other siblings and a variety or records linking them together.  Here are (from what I can determine)  the children of John and Mary:

Ancestry.com trees say John Callahan’s (Timothy’s father) parents were John Callahan and Mary, however, no references have been provided.

In addition, they also indicate he had a brother Timothy Callahan (1838-1892) whose wife was Catherine Sullivan (1834-1900).  Those trees indicate they were married 4 Feb 1857 in Banteer Parish, Co. Cork, Ireland . They later arrived in the United States and settled in Haverhill, Massachusetts.  I am starting research into that branch now in hopes of finding more details about John Callahan/Mary Nagle.

I would appreciate any assistance.  Thank you for your time.

  • Dear Richard,

    Go to www.irishgenealogy.ie

Type in the names John Callaghan and Mary Nagle and you will get their marriage and the baptisms of the couple.

Noval was the old name for the parish which streached between Kilcummin and Rathmore.

Ignore and spelling variations and slight difference in ages and dates, very common in Irish genealogy.

    Regards
