Have a great deal of information on both my great great grandparents but am trying to find out how and where Thomas Delahunty, born 1830(approx.) in Killea, Tiperrary. His RIC record is complete other than cause of death. He was in service but the police memorial has no record of death on duty. He was 19 when he joined and died 10 years later in 1859 leaving a wife, Arabella Butler and a small son, Theobald(Tobias) in Sneem, Kerry. I would love to find cause of death and where he may be buried. They were living in Sneem at the time of his death. This has been a brick wall for lots of years so I really want to solve this. Thank you more than you can imagine.

    Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Do you know what religion Thomas was? This is important as it will help narrow down what Church records you should be looking at. Also, it may determine how successful you are in your search. Generally, before 1900, the Church of Ireland was much better at recording deaths in their registers than the Catholic churches.

In addition to this, you should be aware that most burial records from the period record very limited information, often no more than date of burial, name, address, and sometimes age of the deceased. So even if you do find the death record it probably will not give you cause of death.

With regards to finding the record itself, he could have been buried in either Killea or Sneem. It may be an idea to write to the relevant parish priest in both of these areas for possible assistance.

You could also try contacting the heritage centres in the areas for assistance. However, a fee may apply. Here are their contact details:

Kerry does not have a dedicated Family History Centre, however the Local Studies Department of the Kerry County Library are very helpful. Here is a link to their contact page:

There are also a few online databases that you could try searching. They include:

https://familysearch.org/  This is a huge database of records compiled by the Church of the Latter Day Saints.

http://irishgenealogy.ie/index.html both Catholic and Church of Ireland records from the pre 1900 period, for Carlow, Cork, Dublin and Kerry are currently being uploaded here.

I hope that this is helpful and that you are able to find Thomas?s burial record, you obviously have a lot of work done on your family history so hopefully you can get past this road block. Best of luck!
