  • Greg:

You may want to visit www.irishgenealogy.ie  whihc has church records for Co. Kerry. I searched for Patrick Shea from 1855-1865 and then further narrowed the search to only Valentia RC church. There were four Patrick Shea baptisms in that time period, none in 1859. However, the fathers name was not Patrick for any of the four records.

I would suggest that you search the site to see if you can find any family records.

  • Hi Clare

not really got anywhere at moment. birth date 1859 and place Valentia island are correct from enrolment as Able Seaman. Family names do not tie up with family names in island families that I have researched. The nearest match is with thefamily at Dohilla but I have no evidence for this. Would like to know more about that family though. Looks like a Cornelius and Patrick possible sons of Daniel and Mary.

For patrick to join the navy he would have had to be quite fit and fairly well fed so not from a astarving farming family. The Dohilla crowd seem to be stone quarry men in full employment and the Dohilla stone was exported all over the world which would give some connection to seafare.
