I hope someone can help.

I am looking for any information about the Tuite family from Landenstown. My grandmother was Mary Tuite, born in 1891, daughter of William Tuite and Maria Power. She had six brothers and sisters:

Patrick Tuite 1889-1952
James Tuite 1890 - I believe that he was part of the Caragh GFC championship side of 1918
William Tuite 1893
Ellen Tuite 1895
Anne Tuite 1897 Possibly married someone with the surname Foy
Bridget Tuite 1902 - married Joseph Keely from Caragh

William and Mary Tuite are buried in Killybegs Old cemetary, along with my fathers brother Patick Joseph Fennelly, who died in 1928 aged  about 18 months.

My grandmother moved to England and in 1924 married John Fennelly. My father Antony Richard Fennelly was born in 1927.

I would also like to know if possible where the farm that they lived at was. My suster belives that it was in Prosperous.

Any information would be really appreciate.

I checked the 1901 and 1911 censuses. Your great-grandfather was Patrick Tuite. They lived in Landenstown. Not sure about the reference to Prosperous. Also it appears that William died young.

  • The townland of Landenstown consists of just under 570 acres and is located about 5 km (~3 miles) south east of the town of Prosperous.

many thanks for your response. I did mean to type Patrick for my great grandfathers name,  and I have no idea why I typed William!

Looks like Patrick, the father, died in 1916. Maria or Mary died in 1957 ( if I have the correct Mary). Also, William did die in 1893. You can get copies of the death records from the General Register Office for around 4 euros each. Let me know if you intend to get copies and I will forward instructions.

I finally found the marriage index record for Maria and Patrick. They really misspelled his surname which complicated finding the record. See last record below. You can also get a copy of this record which will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where they lived in 1889.

Many thanks for the information, it fills in a couple of gaps.

I had a loom at the GRO site for copy certificates, and it looks like they charge €20 per certificate. is there another way you can order them for €4?

An original is 20 euros but a copy is around 4 euros. See instructions below.

    Roger

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

  • hi, your grandmother, Maria as we knew her was born in 20.12.1891. she was a sister of Bridget, my grandmother. Bridget is the mother of my father, James, who is alive and well and has great knowledge of the tuites. your grandmother, had two sons, Tony and Patrick. Patrick died 15.2.1928 in ireland and is buried in killybegs cemetery. your grandmother's mother was Maria, nee power, born 2.4.1870 and died 7.2.1957. her husband Patrick quite died 6.7.1916. we have no date of birth for him and my father does not know what part of ireland he came from. we are looking into that. any other info you may need, ask and if we know we will pass it on

Many thanks for getting in touch. It's funny but you get no information for months, and then you contact me, and the same day I had someone from the USA contact me, who is a relative of James Tuite, Maria and Bridgets brother.

Was Bridget married to Joe Kealy (Keely), and also had two daughters called Mary and Philomena?. My two eldest sisters Maeve and Christine visited Landenstown before Bridgets mother Maria died, and your father James might remember them.

I visited the Killybegs cemetary last August and found the grave of Patrick and Maria, and my fathers brother Patrick. It is in a bit of a state now, but then, so is the church!

I belive that Patrick Tuite, Bridgets father was born in 1843 in Kildare.

If you wish, I can give you access to my family tree on ancestry.co.uk, so that you can see the information, right or wrong, that I have.

I would love to know more about the Tuites, as it would seem there was a rift after Maria died, and I have never met any Tuites apart from my Grandmother. Any copies of documents or photo's would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if you know the location of the farm in Landenstown, could you let me know. I thought I had figured it out that is was by the seventeenth lock of the canal, but I now think from looking at the census records that it was further up the canal, past another lock.

I have attached a couple of pictures, one of which is of Bridget and Joe Keely, and the other is I think of Bridget with her family, and Maria as well. Is James the boy in the picture?

    Regards

    Bob
