Hello, I'm trying to get any information or maybe pointed in the right direction to get some information

on the following individuals:  Alexander Long, born abt 1790 in County Donegal; I believe he had a daughter Margaret who married Robert Wray or ray on 10 June 1858 in Donoughmore (district Stranolar)

Alexander also had a daughter, I believe anyway, called Mary anne born abt 1831 in County Donegal, I believe she married John Wray also from County Donegal.

I believe John and Mary anne had a son John James (Wray), but not positive. I was sent some information stating Mary anne and John were married in Dec 1848 in the Presbyterian Meeting House, Donaghmore, (Registration District Stranolar) FHL 101301. John died abt 1911. Lived in Carricknamanna, Killygordon in 1901 and 1911.

My 3rd great grandfather John Long was born in Ballybofey abt 1792 he married Margaret Roulston, they eventually immigrated to Vermont around 1833 - 1835.

I am trying to determine if John and Alexander could have been related, brothers maybe as their birthdates and where they lived is in the same area.

Thanks for any information anyone can supply

The Stranolar Presbyterian records go back to 1821 which is too late for baptismal records for Alexander and John. Therefore, I think it would be difficult to prove they were brothers.

Donaghmore Presbyterian records go back to 1803 for baptisms and 1820 for marriages.

Roots Ireland www.donegal.rootsireland.ie has the records for these parishes according to their index information. Roots is a pay site to see the data from a record.

  • Alan,

You could order the 2 marriage certificates to see where Mary Anne & Mgt Long were both living. That?s likely to be their father Alexander?s address too. His occupation could also be a clue.

Robert Wray & Margaret Long?s marriage was registered in Stranorlar 1858 Volume 10, page 401.

John Wray and Mary Anne Long?s marriage was registered in Stranorlar 1848 Volume 10, page 396.

You can order a photocopy of the certificates from GRO Roscommon for ?4.  http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You have to download and print off the form. Then either post or fax it back to them. You can?t e-mail it to them. However if you want them to e-mail the cert to back to you, they will do that, so tick the relevant box.

Put the reference details on the form (anywhere). Don?t worry about leaving some boxes blank. As long as GRO have the location, name(s), year, quarter (where there is one) volume and page number they should find it.

Death registration only started in Ireland in 1864, so if Alexander Long died before that, you won?t find his death (at least not from statutory sources anyway). However there is one death registered in Stranorlar that might be worth investigating. It was for an Alexander who died Jul ? Sept 1889, Volume 2, page 229. Est year of birth 1799. (Ages were often out by up to 10 years on detach certs. All they were was the informant?s best guess).

The only Alexander Long in Donaghmore parish in Griffiths Valuation lived in Carricknamanna (which obviously ties in with the information you already have). In 1857, he is shown as having a farmhouse, outbuildings and 13 acres. Carricknamanna is a mile or so east of Ballybofey, so that fits well with John Long?s origins.

I agree with Roger that you will strugggle to find any doucmentary evidence that Alexander & John are brothers (at leats from churhc sources), and unless you have an obituary or some other document which tells you John's townland, it may be hard to link them from other sources. There are very few documentary records for Donegal in the 1700s.

  • Thanks Elwyn for the information I will work the photocopy certificate angle and see where it leads me. Who knows I may get lucky, I've found that a lot of times luck is a good tool to have.

I am fairly certain that John Long and Margaret Roulston were from Ballybofey as their death certificate from Vermont states that, I will try to work that angle as well.

Again, thanks for your help, it is greatly appreciated!
