I have been told of a possible ancestor- Samuel Bates of Garrisonhill who apparently married a Catherine Temple of Garrisonhill. I cannot find any record of Catherine Temple or the alleged marriage. If anyone can help it would be appreciated.
If this is correct then the marriage would have produced a John Bates (born around 1856) along with other siblings.
I also have David & William Bates as flax growers in Donaghmore in 1796 and would like to establish any connections from them to my grandfather.
There is also a family mystery as one of my aunts was christened Gertrude Morrison Bates. As there was a tendency for families to carry on family surnames as middle names we assume that there was a connection to a Morrison family in the parish but, again, have no records on the genealogy. If anyone can help solve this puzzle we'd be grateful!

Hi PeperiKiwi
Thanks very much for your post.
You'll be glad to hear that a Bates family still live at Garrison Hill.
They are members of the local Church of Ireland church so maybe you can contact the church using the details on the main Donaghmore page?
Regards,

Hello Peperikiwi, back tracking to the Temple angle. I have a William Temple of Donoghmore who had a son William "Will" Temple born circa 1865. The son lived at Upper Cavan at one time and was at Killynure in the 1901 Census. Young Will married Eliza Anne McClure in 1892 in Convoy. Eliza Anne [or Beth] was Baptised in 1854 in Convoy. Their children were William b. 1895, David b. 1896, Margaret "Maggie".b.1899. Happy to talk further if any family connection. John Gilbert Longwood Vic Aust

Hi John,
My quest has been to extend my Bates-Colhoun-Elliott- Thompson family tree beyond the known 1845-50 point and connect into the recorded familes in the Raphoe-Donoghmore area pre 1820.
Does your family data through the Temple family contain any links to the Bates families who are recorded as living in the Garrisonhill-Carnowen-Raphoe-Strabane area?
If so I'd be pleased to share data.
Regards
Alan Papprill

Hello Alan,
my assumption is that these are part of your irish heritage.
If any of the following turn up in your heritage let me know, i may have a bit of follow up.

My irish names have Thompson australian connections - Shannon, Mahood, Mulraney.
ELLIOTT
George E of Braughanby Donaghmore married 1884 Convoy to Sarah McClure
Robert Elliot bc1797 Antrim married 1824 Neilston Scotland to Agnes Harley

My irish Mahood has two Australian connections [Aussie Elliotts].

COLHOUN
Alexander Calhoun married 1858 Convoy Elizabeth Gregg
TEMPLE

William Temple b.1895 - Royal Irish Constabulary Stokestown County Roscommon.
I have a Thompson researcher who is also checking your names -0 if he picks anything up I will get you to contact him.
If any of this fits - happy to help.
Cheers
John Gilbert
