KILDARE IRELAND

John Killeen (DOB: approx 1814) married date unknown Elizabeth Montgomery (Dob:1824-1874 Sale, Victoria Australia). We have been unable to find any information pertaining to the marriage, life or death even of John Killeen, but understand from family talk, that he was deceased prior to Elizabeth coming to Australia around 1864.

Elizabeths parents were William and Bridget Montgomery however we have not information regarding them.

Emmigration to Australia:

Elizabeth and John's daughter Mary came out first in June 1859 on "The Herald"
Their second son (my Great Great Grand father Gerard Peter Killeen came out on "the King Algeria" in 1861.
Elizabeth (Montgomery) Killeen came to Australia in either 1866 on the "Southern Empire" or 1864 on the "Admiral Bates" as a widow with her two sons Michael and Maurice.

Any help greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Deb,

Thank you very much for your message.

Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find information without a more specific place of origin. Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.

Do you have any documentation pertaining to the family that mentions any place names in Kildare at all? This can include wills, marriage/death records, census records, letters, diary entries etc.

There are some places where you can search online, however it may be difficult to discern whether the results are relevant to your family or not without more information:

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

I did find a record of a John Killeen in Griffith?s s Valuation. This is a property valuation survey that was carried out in Ireland 1848-64. It doesn?t offer any genealogical information but sometimes it can be used to tie a person to a specific place. Although there is no way to know for sure whether this is your John or not, if all else fails you could use it as a starting point for your research:

  • Hi Deb

I have been in touch with Eddie Byrne in Dublin and he has some information about the Killeens. He found them in the Balyna parish in Kildare and also Balinabracky parish in Meath. He sent 4 photos from the records. You have to look for the various spellings of this name. Killian is one. But just to start, Eddie thinks thses could be the family. John Killian married Elizabeth Montgomery on 29 Jul 1833. Children were Mary born 28 Nov 1835, Ruth born 29 Jan 1837, Peter (maybe Gerard Peter) born 30 Jun 1839, Mick born 3 Oct 1841, Maurice born 28 Jul 1844 and Eliz born 26 Aug 1849. Looking for a baptismal for John, you might try earlier than 1814, maybe 1804 to 1809 in Balyna. I have a Byrne maternal ancestor. There was a Michael Killeen born 1875 died 1916 at the Somme,France married to Jane Byrne. His parents were John and Mary Killeen of Longwood, Meath. John had a sister, Mary. This would mean that John was born in the 1840s or 50s but it is someplace to look!

    Cheers

    John

  • Michael Killeen was my great grandfather born in 1876 in Ballinbrackey parish co Meath , he had 3 brothers and 2 sisters , John was born in 1869

I had a problem searching for records as the surname on birth Certs ranged from Killane to Kellin Killane

Not sure where Longwood ever came from , it threw me off the scent for a while

  • Hi MBurke62

The Longwood came from GMIC site in the UK. Military site.

Michael Killeen Private 2nd Battalion, Royal Dublin FusiliersMichael was born in Longwood, Co. Meath as a son of John and Mary Killeen on the 1877. After his childhood, Michael moved to Dublin and married with the Jane Killeen around 1899. They had four sons and three daughters. Michael worked as a Coal Labourer. And their family lived in 33 Constitution Hill, Arran Quay, Dublin (6/8).

Longwood is 15 kms south of Trim. Kildare, the Royal Canal and other canals are nearby.

    Cheers
