Joseph Nolan immigrated to the United States of America during the mid 19th century.

He fought in the U.S Civil war as a Union Navy Sailor.  After the war, he settled in the State of Arkansas

He ran the ferry line across the Arkansas river from Fort Smith Arkansas to Salisaw, Oklahoma (Indian Territory).

We know he had at least three sons:  Robert Emmett Nolan, John Nolan and Will Nolan, plus at least one daughter Ann Nolan.

Before WWII most of the Nolans settled in the North east area of Oklahoma, Stillwell, Adair County.

After WWII the family began to spread to Colorado, Wyoming and California.

In 1995, the youngest son of Robert Emmett Nolan, Emmett Duane Nolan, and his family traveled to Kildare to try to find relatives.  We met a Nolan family and the elderly gentleman was the picture image of my uncle Eugene Nolan.  Gene Nolan is another son of Robert Emmett Nolan.

If anyone knows anything in relation to our search, please contact us as soon as possible.

Thank you,  Linda Nolan Williamson

  • Hi Linda

I'd like to try to help if I can.  Do you have any dates for any of the children's births?  And do you know the name of James Nolan's wife?  Also, do you have any idea of when or where he died?  Obviously it would be after the last childs birth so that's why the children's births are helpful.  They might also lead to a location.

    Bye for now.

  • I am looking for Joseph Nolan's family.  His wife's name is Harriet Nolan - born 1848 & died 1921.  Both Joseph Nolan and Harriet Nolan are buried at Caney Creek Cementary, Adair County, Oklahoma.

Before Harriet, Joseph married another woman, had a son, and divorced her then married Harriet.

Joseph Nolan had  3 sons and 4 girls.  Annie Nolan West was born 1876 / died 1918 and Fannie Nolan Riddle was born 1879 / died 1960.  Both are buried at Caney Creek Cementary, Adair County, Oklahoma.  Annie lived in Stillwell, Oklahoma and Fannie lived on Bitting Creek a rural area near Stillwell , Oklahoma.

The three know sons of Joseph Nolan include:  John Nolan is the oldes and is buried in Mulgrove Arkansas and had one child - a girl named Bonnie Nolan;  Robert Emmett Nolan was the second son and is buried at Caney Creek in Oklahoma and had 12 children through two wives, Lucinda Bohannon and Para Lee Hare Nickols Nolan.  Then there was William Nolan and his wife Dora who had 7 children.  Uncle Will had 3 sons, Dude, Slick and Pat.  They also had 4 girls - Gladys, Gertrude, Buena and ?.

My Dad is Emmett Duane Nolan, the youngest child of Robert Emmett Nolan, the second of Joseph Nolan.

    Thank you so much.

  • Hi Linda
I've found a little bit about Joseph Nolan and his family but nothing to say where in Ireland he was from.  I wonder where you got the link to Kildare from?

    What I did find:
1880 US Census for Alma, Crawford, Arkansas shows Joseph Nolan, 41, farm labourer, born Ireland living with his wife Harriett, 31, born Mississippi, son John, 6, born Ark, daughter Ann, 4, born Ark and daughter Fanny, 2, born Ark.

1900 US Census for Lees Creek & Union Township, Crawford, Arkansas shows Joseph Nolan, 61, farmer, born Ireland living with his wife Harriett, 52, son William M, 19, son Robert E, 15, and daughter Mildred, 13.  This census record states that Joseph and Harriet were married 26 years, had given birth to 6 children and 6 still living, and that Joseph had immigrated to US 42 years previous in 1858.
If these are the correct records it shows that Joseph and Harriet only had 6 children in total and gives a marriage date around 1874.

I also found a record on FamilySearch.org for a marriage between Harriet J Rozell and Joseph Nolan dated 25 Dec 1874, place Crawford, Arkansas.  This was not a civil record rather a genealogy record so I cannot say if it is correct.  It also gives her parents names: William Rite/Rozell and Mary M Polly/Long.

Unfortunately statewide registration of births and deaths in Arkansas didn't start until 1914 and marriages in 1917 which makes finding records for your family difficult.

I wonder if there would be any church records from Crawford available that might give marriage details or baptism details for any of Joseph and Harriets children?  Do you know if the family was Catholic?  You could try contacting the RC Church in Crawford to ask about their archives.

I hope the above information relates to your family and is of help.  Let me know what you think or if you have any further information.

    Best regards
