Hello! I am looking for information regarding the Shea Family who at one time lived in Ballinteskin. Our great, great grandfather, Thomas Shea(born around 1834) immigrated to the United States in the 1850's. He moved to New Hampshire and lived in Hancock, New Hampshire as well as Greenfield, New Hampshire. Does anyone have any insight into the Shea family who lived in and around Ballinteskin? We are hoping to visit Kilkenny county in September.

Sincerely,

Sylvia Shea

  • There is a transcription for the baptism in 1834 of a Thomas Shea in Ballinteskin on RootsIreland:

    THOMAS SHEA

    Baptism: July 23, 1834
    Address: Ballinteskin
    Parish/District: BALLYHALE
    Co. Kilkenny
    : Roman Catholic
    Father: Thomas Shea
    Mother: Ellen Walsh

    Sponsors:
    Patrick Aylward
    Mary Wall

This Thomas had an older sister and brother.

There is also a John Shea and Bridget Poor in Ballinteskin who had a son, Thomas, in 1824.

    I hope this is helpful.

  • Hello Patricia,

Thank you so much for your response. This is valuable information. There were actually two cousins named Thomas and I am pretty sure that these are the birthdates of the two cousins. Both members of the Walsh family and the Shea family settled in Hancock, New Hampshire.

I have been searching for baptismal records and your reference to the records is so helpful. My apologies for being so late in responding to you. I did not really expect a response and was negligent about checking back in to the website. I and was so happy to see that you had  taken the time and responded to my inquiry.

Do you know in what church the baptism would have taken place?

We are headed to Ireland on September 15th and are looking forward to our visit to Kilkenny county and Ballinteskin. We are all fully vaccinated and will be conscientious about following the Covid rules in Ireland.

Thank you again for your response.

  • There were also three Walsh families in Ballinteskin in the Tithe Applotments, probably one of them was Ellen's family:

Walsh John Ballinteskin Aghaviller Kilkenny 1834
Walsh Thos Ballinteskin Aghaviller Kilkenny 1834
Walsh Patrick Ballinteskin Aghaviller Kilkenny 1834
