Looking into the history of the Leehan family. Timothy and Jerimiah Leehan traveled to Illinois in the 1850s. I know their father's name was Edward Leehan. After doing some more research I found an Edward Leehan from 1901 census. They were from Barrickhill (Barton), Ballinamara, Kilkenny. I am trying to find some records on Edward Leehan, thinking his father may have also been Edward Leehan and is a brother to Timothy Leehan. Any help would be appreciated.

    I don't believe the family you found in the 1901 census is related to your family. If you look closely at the census record and also check form B1, the name is really Teehan for this family. This is corroborated by the 1911 census. Also, I'm wondering if your family surname in Ireland was Leahy and was changed to Leehan when they came to the USA.

    The 1849 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Kilkenny shows no Leehan families and in fact there were no Leehan families in all of Ireland in the Griffiths.

    Do you know that your family came from Co. Kilkenny or did you base that on the 1901 census record that you found? If they were from Kilkenny, there were two Edward Leahy records.

  • Thank you so much for the quick reply Mr. McDonnell. Upon further investigation, I am coming up with Edward Leehan born 1798 in Bandon, Cork. I sent a message to that area as well. I am also wondering if the name could have been Lenihan or Leehane or as you stated Leahy. This is the message I just sent. Any ideas where I should research next?

    I am researching my grandmother's family. Maiden name Leehan. Or maybe Lehan. Or Leehane. I've been researching on ancestry.com and found a trail that may have lead to Bandon, Cork. Timothy Leehan was her grandfather. He was born in Ireland on or around September 10th 1822. I *think* his father's name was Edward Leehan, born in 1798. Timothy married a woman named Ellen Conley born around 1831. I think he had a brother named Jerimiah 'Jerry' Leehan. Also both Jerry and Timothy had daughters named Julia, so I am wondering if their mother may have been Julia. Of course last names may have been mispelled, and information may be not correct, but I'm hoping someone can help me. Thanks.

    I saw your posting in the Bandon parish page.

    You may want to go to www.irishgenealogy.ie which has the RC records for the parishes in the Diocese of Cork and Ross including Bandon. You can search for Leehan but most of the records will come back as Lehane.
