I have been researching my great-great grandparents. On their marriage records, Laurence Doheny (born about 1838) and Alice Hoban (born about 1840) stated that they were from Ireland. I wonder if there is a possibility of confirming that.

Now, Alice Hoban, listed her parents as William Hoban and Catherine (Unknown surname). They were also listed as from Ireland.

Laurence Doheny (possibly spelled Doheney) stated his parents were Patrick and Mary (unknown surname), also from Ireland.

I know it's not much to go on, but I'd be grateful for any insight on where I can learn about these family members.

  • Wonderful! From what I can put together, Alice Hoban would have been born around 1836. Laurence, around 1838. So, a couple of your finds look promising! Given the information you have given me, what should be my next step in researching these lovely people?

  • If you want to work back from them you can search for their parents' marriages on rootsireland (subscription) or findmypastireland (credit required); if the record has the parents' parents names on it you can keep working back

There are some free sites also: Irish Censuses 1821-911; Tithe Applotments; Griffiths Valuation; Family Search

Here's the closest to 1838 for Laurence:
